    Hi All-

I'm hoping one you guys can help me, My laptop froze the other day and there was nothing I could do but manually shut it down via the power button (hate doing that) however when it booted back up it was unable to load, I ran recovery which advised me that it could not fix the problem...I went through the advance check and still was unable to fix it. I have some fam pics and a video project on there I had not backed up yet and I really, really don't want to do a whole overhaul of the computer...please help me boot! :(

    Thanks All,

    SeaShell

It was the automatic recovery that vista runs when a problem occurs, it gives me the option to start normally (which results in a restart and back to the same options) or the "launch startup repair" - once it runs that repair it says it cannot help me, I check the log for the repair and it claims to not start due to a corrupt registry. After I'm told it was unable to repair, it gives me an option for advanced settings which offers system restore, recovery manager, system restore, etc and all options fail to help. Thanks for the response, hoping you can help :)

So, basically, the laptop is in a loop, correct?
Did you try to boot into Safe Mode?
What happens, when you try to use System Restore?
    Do you have Vista DVD?

Look at choosing an earlier Restore point.

    What is the exact error?

When you try to boot (in normal mode), do you get any error message? If so, please list that one too.

OK, Lets See...Safe mode is an option though is not available, just restarts the pc. System Restore is not working, says it's unable to perform the function. When I start normally it goes through the motions of booting up as right as it would load the windows screen rather it restarts again. I don't have a Vista disk, the laptop was purchased with the OS already on it and the D: drive holding the recovery. I technically don't get an error or a blue screen, just a log at the end of the system recovery (that is not working) that says it found a corrupt registry that cannot be fixed by the recovery system. I'm actually not at home with the laptop now but if it's helpful I can't take pics of the log results that display exactly what it found. You all are awesome, I appreciate you working me through this!

When you try running the System Restore, does it show you a calendar? Check on that calendar for other Restore dates and try running those.

Different manufacturers have various "recovery" systems, but unless you have made backups with that system, the only option may be to go back to the "factory install" which will wipe all data on the HDD.

Do you have backups of your data? What if the only option you have is to (reformat) reinstall the factory image?

If you need the data off the HDD, it may be possible to use a boot CD to copy it to an external USB HDD, but it may be a fair amount of work.

What is the make of laptop? Check at the manufacturer's website for information on this situation, although there may not be many options unless you have used their backup system.

It seems that if you cannot find a version of the registry that will work, you will be faced with re-imaging.

    Matt
