Hi, a week ago or so I tried to install a Vista theme on my girlfriends new ultraportable computer. It's a HP Mini something. It's running with an older Fujitsu Siemens Windows Home SP2 edition.

I did this by downloading Vista theme from www.customize.org and patching the uxtheme.dll to allow install, during the patch I had some issues with notifications from the anti virus (Panda, I think?) but I thought it didn't matter and choosed to ignore. I also got some notifications about putting in Win XP Home CD, which I also ignored.

Now I know I should have stopped then, but I've never managed to mess things up with this method before on other computers and I thought it would be fine. Anyways.

After I had backuped the old uxtheme.dll and put in the new one, and the new theme I rebooted the machine. After that, no explorer. Running a command prompt or Run command explorer.exe gives the "Can't find Explorer.exe controll your spelling" error, and nothing else.

I tried removing the new uxtheme.dll and replaced it with the old one, to no luck. I also tried downloading a new uxtheme.dll from www.dll-files.com and replace the others, also to no luck.

Bottomline: I was hoping there is a solution to this issue, -without- putting in the Win XP Home CD.

    Thanks for reading,
    Tommy.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;

You should be able to CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up task manager.
Under FILE->RUN you should be able to type in Explorer.exe to get the machine running....If so - try doing a System Restore.

    Thanks.
And I'm sorry if it came out wrong in my post but I have tried doing the task manager Run command.

    Edit: I'll try system restore
Edit 2: Just have to get in touch with her and get her to try it, so it might take a while. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hello, back here reporting.

Unfortunately, system restore wasn't turned on from before (Why isn't that default? =( )
    Other suggestions?

Hi Heiheiho Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try this, In task mananger click File< New Task. Type cmd in the run box and press enter. After the command prompt window opens type sfc /scannow and press enter. Note that there is a space between the c and the / in the sfc /scannow command. Have your Windows XP CD handy in case SFC needs a file.

Do you have a Windows XP CD that you can boot from? It looks like that you might have to boot from a Windows XP CD to repair the Windows installation. Let me know if you have a CD and we'll go from there.

I don't see any other way of getting this issue resolved without using a Windows XP CD. Can you confirm that Windows Explorer is in the C:/Windows folder?

    Follow these steps:

    1. Boot from a Windows XP CD and when setup has finished loading press R to open the recovery console.
    2. When the recovery console opens it will ask you which windows installation you want to repair.
    3. Type 1 and press enter.
    4. After that it will ask you to type the administrator password. If you don't have a password leave it blank and press enter otherwise type it in.
    5. After thats done type chkdsk /r and press enter. The process will take a while. Let me know if it finds any corrupted Windows files.
    6. After check disk has finished type exit to quit the recovery console. Then press F3 to quit Wnidows setup. See if the computer will boot normally now.
    7. If windows explorer still won't load then Perform a Repair Install.

Let me know if Windows Explorer loads after peforming the above steps. :)
