I just got a new HP laptop with Vista and was lasily dragging my finger accross the touch pad when a DOS window opened, a lot of text quickly scrolled by, and then it closed. All the files were now deleted in my desktop folders. The empty folders and subfolders remain. The files are not in the recycle bin. When I did a search it shows them, but the little icon next to the file name is just a rectangle instead of a cute icon and no other info is in the search window e.g. the path, file size, etc. is all blank. When I do a right or left mouse click on them, I get no menu and no action.

I am new to Vista, but good with XP and DOS. I am lost on this one. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

I don't think, it's possible to delete a whole bunch of stuff by just playing with a touchpad.
Try to restart computer, and if that doesn't help, try system restore.
I think, it's just some system file corruption, than something really got deleted.

    They are gone

Oh yea they are gone. I think the System Restore only restores system files not user files.

    I'll try it

I was afraid you'd say that. Any idea what happened? Does a DOS delete not put the files in the Windows Recycle Bin?

No - DOS or more correctly the DOS Emulator in XP/Vista effectively works outside Windows.

That's true, but I'm simply surprised, some files got deleted by playing with touchpad.
