I just reinstalled WinXP Home on my computer, and updated from Avira 8 to Avira 9 (free versions in both cases). When I right-click on any of the items on my desktop except one, the context menu shows two entries for "Scan selected files with AntiVir" and "Backup" (for some reason, when I right-click on Skype, neither entry is duplicated). With SuperAntiSpyware installed, that, too, ends up with a duplicate entry in the context menu. For whatever it's worth, both Avira and SuperAntiSpyware scans are clean. The duplicate items aren't causing any problems (they all work as they're supposed to), but it disturbs my sense of order/neatness to have them all there.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both Avira and SuperAntiSpyware, but the duplicate context menu items reappear each time. This didn't happen with the previous version of Avira.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to get rid of the extra entries?

    Thanks!

    Hi Rebecca,

Have a look here for tools and instructions to edit your context menu.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Wildfire!

Using ShellExView, I can disable the "Shell extension for Malware Scanning ", but then I lose the option to "Scan selected files with AntiVir" in my context menu altogether, so I guess I either have to live with the duplicate items or simply forgo the Avira scan option.

The 'backup' item in my context menu is apparently for Acronis True Image - definitely don't need that one there, so no problem with disabling that one.

It still bothers me, though, that despite multiple un/reinstallations of the programs, I can't get the Avira and the SuperAntiSpyware scans to show up as single items in my context menu... Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Ok,

My advice would be to temporarily uninstall both programs, then follow the instructions previously to remove all context menu entries. Finally reinstall both programs, fingers crossed you'll only have one entry for each ;)

Please let us know how you get on.
