I have a laptop that loads to Vista desktop and within seconds it will start saving settings and then reboot. I have seen many issues of this on the net regarding XP but nothing to resolve the issue in Vista.

I have removed the H/D and used many tools to remove certain infections but the issue is still there (although it's now virus free). I have tried another H/D in the laptop and it works fine. The original H/D shows up as being over temp but other than that it gets a clean bill of health.

I presume it is similar to the XP one where it changes a registry key or 2!

I know I can wipe and re install but I would like to know for my own knowledge how or if this could be fixed!!,,,

Well, if the hard drive is overheating, there is certainly something wrong with it.

Broni might say I am wrong, but after malware has been "extracted" from a system, I am not surprised that it may never work correctly again. Maybe extracting a simple malware may work fine, when you talk about viruses, they are meant to damage the system. When you talk about multiple instances of malware being extracted, expecting the system to run like "new ", not me.

I avoid malware rather than having to have to remove it.

I have had this Vista system since 2006, I wouldn't have run an antivirus or antispyware scan more than a dozen times. My last antivirus scan found "zero ". Antispyware found some tracking cookies.

My suggestion, try avoiding malware, rather than trying to remove it and wondering why the system doesn't work correctly.

    Matt

This did not boot with the malware etc on it in the 1st place. I do this as a hobby and a job, It is not my laptop but a customer who wanted her data saved. I have done that and am now just trying to find what got changed for future knowledge.

This issue is well known in XP and is quite easy to fix, this is Vista and I am looking for a similar fix. It's no big deal, I am just being "geeky" and intrested as to what got changed or corrupt!!

It is also being discussed here
    :)

I'd try a Startup Repair from Vista's DVD. Boot off the DVD, select Repair Options and select Startup Repair.

So I'd go with the attempt to create a new account as posted on the other forum.

    If not, re-install 'on top'.

There does not seem a way to create a new account because of the re booting issue! Unless someone knows better,,,;)

Hi awkward. At this point since you can't create a new profile then I would try a repair intall of Vista using the Vista DVD. You should be able to perform an in-place-upgrade over the existing install of Vista. I would try that and see if that works.

    Hi Evan,

I have just managed to enable the guest account but that re boots as well before it had time to create desktop for 1st use. It also re boots if you just leave it on the welcome screen with the user + guest logon options and it also does it in safe mode still!!,,,
I tried the start up repair and it says it can't repair it.
If you try to reinstall over the top it warns you that all original windows files etc will be moved to a folder (not recomended i think)

Although this seems almost impossible to repair, I will keep trying everything possible just to see if we can find what, where and why something got changed!!
    Because we can!!:)

Try to re-seat RAM. If you have more, than 1 RAM stick, try with 1 stick at a time.

Ok thanks, reading that it may explain why certain stuff would not work. If, the laptop has SP1 (it probably has) the Vista dvd I was using didn't have SP1.

I will try some stuff again with a Vist dvd I have here with SP1 on it.
    Thanks
I will let you know what happens:)

I got all the same results with the Vista DVd with SP1 as I did with the one without!!

No joy still. Upgrade is greyed out on the dvd install and then it tells you about another installation that will be moved to a folder called windows old!!

So still no install repair as such, and "repair start" up still fails!

I think, we're back to square one:
    You may...

    Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, which is not listed, try using Hitachi tools.

I have run many H/D diagnostic tests for many hours and the only issue they mention is that it has been overtemp. It doesn't re boot during these tests.

...means, there is something wrong with it...
If I had a choice of spending few days, trying to figure out what's wrong, vs. new 500GB hard drive for $75, I wouldn't even think for a second.

Run the HDD manufacturer's testing utilities on the drive.

I have, and also many others, they ALL report a clean bill of health without re booting during testing. The only warning it gives is that it had been over temp.
I am only persevering with this for FUN!!, just to see if it is similar to the XP re boot issue which is quite easy to fix.:)
