Can't download Microsoft updates [insert the XP OS disk]

    This ia a problem my son is having. He has a fairly old Gateway desktop pc and whenever he tries to download Windows updates, he gets a note asking him to insert the XP OS disk ... he has no disk. Is there a way around this?
