I have done a factory recovery of an HP m8200n desktop with Vista Home Premium. I am now trying to install an HP6210 AIO printer but the printer install program does not recognize the USB cable when it is plugged in during the install process yet, the same USB port will recognize a jump drive when it is plugged in.

The printer was installed and working on this machine prior to the recovery.

The downloaded version of the printer driver is only a complete install package vs. a simple driver package for the printer.

Can anyone shed some light on how I might go about getting this turkey to install again?

    Thanks

Check at the HP website for driver updates for the m8200n. Chipset drivers updates should include those for the USB controllers.

Get any driver updates before installing SP1.

After installing driver updates, look in Control Panel -> Programs and Features, uninstall any HP printer software, then try running the installation again.

Try right-clicking on the file and selecting Run as administrator. If it won't work like that, try copying the files to the hard drive first.

Edit: You will need to find the installer file (usuallly Setup.exe) and right-click on that.

    Hi Matt:

I am not having much fun here... I have uninstalled the printer with the L4 Uninstall program on the CD as well as the onboard Vista uninstaller and they appear to be gone. Restarting after every process.

I then copied the contents of the CD to a new folder on the Desktop and tried to "install as Administrator" but it wont let me.

I'm open to any other insight you might have.

    Thanks

I shall make note the next time I try it later today

I did disable it but it wouldn't install before I killed that bit of agro

I shall try this first before reporting back on the error wording

    Thanks Matt

    Hi Matt:
Tried your suggestions but I still cannot install it when logged into the hidden admin account. The message below is exactly what I get when I try.

I tried to install the printer from the CD and then tried by copying everything from the CD to the HDD and trying to set it up from there but neither worked.

I did install the HP6200 printer that was listed in the HP printer models when I tried to Add a printer but it installs it to LPT1. There is no choice to setup a USB connection and naturally, it does not print.

    Will await further suggestions,
    Thanks

It talks about the minimum requirements, so check those, they are listed here:
    http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/e...38444-12019-3328084-391210-391212-391213.html
Do you have plenty of disk space?

For the first time installation, you will need to use the HP CD or download and follow the instructions carefully. If it is not successful, you need to completely uninstall and start again.

You should work with UAC enabled, because the installer will be set to work that way.

Did you get the "Critical Updates "? (Both involve connectivity.)
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=421991

Did you get the driver updates for the computer?

You can consider doing a System Restore to before you started trying to install it, but you will need to install the computer driver updates again.

I don't have many other suggestions. If it is still under warranty you could contact their Support service.

Yes, no problem here. It was previously installed prior to the recovery process

    Heaps

I first tried the CD then downloaded the online files and tried those.

There was a printer installed after the first attempt but the computer could not find the printer when asked. I used the L3 & L4 uninstall utilities on the CD but the printer was still installed. I wound up using the Windows uninstaller to get rid of it and now, there is no printer listed.

I re-enabled UAC and it didn't make any difference

I have them downloaded and ready to install once the printer is

Windows is fully up to date.. other than that, please explain

I think that this might be the trick unless my answers have shed new light

No, they won't talk to me unless I pay them what I consider to be an exorbitant fee

    Thanks for your input

Here is information about that error message
    http://search.hp.com/query.html?cha...ments&submitsearch.x=8&submitsearch.y=6&hpl=0
See if you can work out why you would be getting it.

    Here are the computer drivers
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3548185
I have a similar system and it uses Windows standard drivers for the USB (I thought there might be USB controller driver updates). If you install those updates, then do a System Restore, you will need to install them again.

You can go to Device Manger -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers, highlight and uninstall any devices there, they will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot. Go back and check there is a listing with the term "Enhanced ".

Did you have a printer installed before this one. Check in Programs and Features and uninstall any programs/software for it.

If you do a System Restore, don't follow the same path or you will end up in the same place. Read back over the thread and check everything first. Actually it might be best to try a System Restore before you make too many changes.

If you are stuck, try going to User Accounts and make a new user with administrator rights. Try installing there.

Quickly running out of ideas :(

    Matt

    Well Matt, I:
    - installed all driver updates
    - uninstalled the USB controllers
    - did the system restore and tried to install from the installation files downloaded from HP but the same error came up

While standing there swearing at the thing I plugged the printer in to the computer (in a kind of gesture of "Up Yours ") and VISTA in all of it's glory installed the bloody thing from the on board driver pool. I thought 'ya, right' I already installed that one but then the SOB had the nerve to print a bloody test page.

Bottom line is, it is printing but there must still be a problem with the Vista installation so I am thinking that I am going to back up and do another system recovery. Hopefully I won't run into the same issue and therefore avoid it when it comes time to install something else.

Thanks for all of your suggestion. I shall let you know what happens with the next round at the beginning of June

I've seen that happen several times. If you have one unsuccessful install it may be only luck that subsequent tries eventually work, so I look for anything related to previous printers as a possible cause and try to get "rid of" any of those.

I wouldn't know if the Wndows Installer is involved, but there is an update
    Windows Installer 4.5 is available
    There a clean-up utility
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
