    Hi all,

Well, I finally dragged myself, kicking and screaming, into the 20th century.

After some 3+ hours, I finally got SP2 installed. However, now my splash screen just say Windows XP.

    I know, I know, on an importance scale of 1 - 10, this rates a minus 11.

I've searched all over the place (obviously not the right places) and can't find anything that helps. I've tried to amend the boot.ini file with: /noguiboot /bootload at the end of the line and added winnt.bmp to the root of C:\, but it didn't work.

Anyone know how to get my "Professional" splash screen back?

That is 'by design' - irritating maybe, but that's the way it is.

Irritating in that when working on a computer it is not immediately obvious which OS is loaded (Home/Pro) without going to Properties unless setup to show the version on the Desktop.

It would still only show on boot up.

For me WinKey + Pause/Break is something I do without thinking, that shows me what I need to know (Home/Pro & service pack level)

    Hi PeteC,

DITTO! I have a dual boot system and I'm going to have to amend the boot.ini to distinguish which is which now: Especially since the SP2 update altered my boot order and it's now reversed.

    Hi all,

Quick update: I just wasn't happy that I couldn't change the boot screen so I embarked on a quest to "fix it ".

I found ways to do it, but they involved amending the ntoskrnl.exe file. Since I'm loath to do anything to a system file, I kept looking.

I'll spare you the details of the brain damage I went through, but I finally found a program that did it. Plus, I had my choice of making the boot screen just "Professional ", or "Professional (servicepack2) "! :D

    I'm now a happy camper!

    Note to PeteC:
I had the same irritation until I amended my boot.ini so that when I had a list of OS's to choose from, I added a (2) so I'd know which was which. Which is how I found out that after installing SP2, XP Pro(2) became the default boot.

Another option is to use a 3rd party boot loader such as LILO or GRUB, or others. One can then easily change the names of the boot menu choices, use custom graphics, etc.

    Hi TonyT,

That's exactly what I mean! I have to use 3rd party programs or hack system files to make my computer the way I want. IMNSHO, I shouldn't have to. I should be able to customize add\remove whatever I want within Windows to truly make it a "P "C.

And as far as removing "Professional" after the SP2 update being by design, what design? What's the purpose

    Here's an interesting analogy .....

You do not own the copy of XP installed on your computer, merely a licence to use the software as intended by MS.You do not have the 'right' to hack the software in the manner you suggest.

Taking the analogy of a rental car - same situation in that you pay for using it, but do not own it - how would Hertz et al feel if you had it resprayed, bored out the engine ...... :)

    Doesn't quite work ;)

At the end of the rental period you're expected to return the car to Hertz in much the same condition it was when you hired it. Would MS expect you to send them your HD after you give up your license so they can retrieve the OS :D

@PeteC: "You do not own the copy of XP installed on your computer, merely a licence to use the software as intended by MS. You do not have the 'right' to hack the software in the manner you suggest. "

I have to differ with you on this as Micro$oft has hacks listed on it's site that are not originally intended. And, using your rental car analogy vs hacking\ownership: It would be like the rental company sending a sat signal to add 50 miles to the total driven (i.e., changing the original without my permission — which is what MS did by removing the "Professional" from my splash screen). Why shouldn't I be able to "correct" this? Or, make my computer my computer?

Also, this is a biggie, I "own" my copy of XP, it is not a rental. Micro$oft has granted me a license to use the software any way I see fit (with the obvious exception of doing anything illegal): Meaning I can hack to my hearts content, and this was verified my MS just now, twice. (Shout out to wildfire: One of the reps was from Scotland)

@wildfire: "Would MS expect you to send them your HD after you give up your license so they can retrieve the OS :D "

I had to LOL out loud myself on that one. :p I called a leasing company and asked: "If I leased a Yugo from you for three years and during that time I turned it into a Cadillac, when my lease was up, would you demand I return it in it's original state? "
He replied: "No. Anything I did to the car that increased it's value would be taken into consideration at turn in time. "

So, if MS wants "their" OS back, they'll have to pay me extra because it's bigger, stronger, faster and prettier than when I got it. (kinda sounds like a toilet paper slogan, huh? :D )
