So, i was thinking i was smart looking for spyware in safe mode (my computer still lags like no tomorrow), and i was going to do a regcure scan. Theres a problem though...

the screen resolution is so small, I cant move the window up enough to actually reach the "scan now" or "fix issues" buttons..... i cant resize the window either, even in regular mode. is there some way to do this in safe mode? has anyone else tried this program in safe mode before?

Hi Mel. I would stay away from registry cleaners especially Regcure. Regcure is considered a scam and will not make your computer any faster. I would uninstall the program and read this article, Why I Don't Use Registry Cleaners.

    Hi Mel,

Evan's advice is a "must ". The only time you want to fool around with the registry is if you have a specific problem or you want to tweak your system.

But what I'd like to know is what you mean by, "my computer still lags like no tomorrow "?

Startup? Shutdown? Programs opening, closing or running?

well, basically all of the above. it got so bad ive enabled hibernation on a desktop... i usually always shut down completely. but it just sits there for like 2 minutes on startup with only the desktop wallpaper showing. but i only have mouse software, AVG, and something called HKCMD that seems necessary starting up - thats it. so i know its not that i need to clean that out (i already have). using anything flash or shockwave on the internet lags. facebook even lags. so basically i figure if i clean the registry it could only get better. (i always save the changes before doing them). my ram isnt great, but it wasnt great before and the system was running better/smoother.

all temp files get deleted all the time too. like once every 2 or 3 days

    Hi Mel,

OK! Now we've got something to work with!

    1) How much RAM do you have?

    2) What has a check mark in MSCONFIG?

    3) Browser?

    4) Are you comfortable with editing the registry?

    5) Is AVG set to scan at startup?

    6) HKCMD is "Intel Hotkey command activator ". Do you use hot keys often?

There's more, but, your answers will help to determine where to start. There's some very knowledgeable people here that can guide you.

In addition to what Chris said, try following these steps to make your computer run faster.

    Please do the following:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Disable any Windows Services that you don't need by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files.
    6. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    7. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defragmenter from here, http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download.

Let me know if your computer is any faster after performing the above steps. :)

    ram is 512, 2.39 ghz.

msconfig has 'logi_mwx' (mouse software), 'avgtray' and 'hkcmd'.

avg doesnt scan at startup... its not set to scan at all, i do that all manually. the more timers there is going on the slower its gonna go. i have java as check manually for updates too.

if hotkeys is things like ctrl+c, i use those all the time. lol. depends what they do, lol.

    Hi Mel,

Your RAM is sufficient and your Processor is good, too.

As far as 'hot keys' go (ctrl + V; ctrl + C, etc.), Windows has about 20 to 30 global hot keys that require no additional software (see: http://www.autohotkey.com/wiki/index.php?title=Standard_Windows_Hotkeys )

Evan's advice about removing Windows Components will gain you some speed, as well as disabling some Windows Services "” definitely resource hogs.

Please follow Evan's advice, and when you're done, post back if your computer isn't as fast as the day you got it.
