    Hi all,

I'm running XP Pro, SP1a. I've tried on numerous occasions to install SP2, but it always crashes my machine. And, yes, I have the disk from MS.

Is it possible to install just one update at a time to find out what the problem is? If so, how?

Hi Chris. You could download each update individually but that would take a while. Also since you have SP1 installed you could just skip SP2 and try installing Service Pack 3.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 is available for download here, Windows XP Service Pack 3. Make sure you shut down all background programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar before you try to install the update. Let me know how it goes. :)

    Hi Evan,

The only things I have in the systray are AVG and the speaker. (well, the clock, too).

I've gone into msconfig and unchecked everything, opened task mangler and exited from just about everything in there except explorer.exe and it still crashed it. I spent over 4 hours on the phone with MS getting rid of SP2 and getting my system up and running again.

If I'm having this much brain damage with SP2, I shudder to think what SP3 will do.

As far as taking time to install the SP2 updates one at a time "” I really don't mind. That way if one of them is the culprit, I'll know which one it is. Is there a way to spoof that I have SP2?

How do I install the updates one at a time from the disk?

You can't. You'd have to use Windows Update, or download individual updates from Microsoft Download.

Do you have a Windows XP CD by any chance? If you do then you could slipstream SP2 onto the CD and then slipstream SP3. Then you could perform a repair install of XP and after its done you would have SP3 installed on the computer.

How to SlipStream Windows XP SP2 and Create a Bootable CD.
