    Hello all,

I'm trying to help a local community support group solve a connection issue.

The problem is one of their computers doesn't connect to the 2wire modem/router when using the belkin wireless utility software on limited accounts (admin accounts are ok). The obvious solution is to use XP's zero wireless config but this brings up another issue...

Unfortunately the volunteer who originally setup the network did not inform any of the current staff what the access key was (WEP 64) and although the router itself is not password protected if I change the access key it would mean changing settings on several computers which I'd rather not do.

Anyway, long story short has anyone encountered this problem before and if so any solutions using the belkin software? A temporary fix is to start the computer as Admin and log off when members log on thereafter internet access is available.

Note: I am not asking for ways to hack/crack the access key.

This is a problem with the Belkin wifi connection software. Your options are:

    1. Let Windows manage wifi connections.
    2. Use "runas" each time the limited user connects.
    3. Use a different 3rd party wifi connection software.

Best to let Windows manage the wifi connections.

Use this app on a computer that can connect to grab the WEP key.
    Wireless Key View
Note, it may not be able to grab the key from the Belkin utility, but the Belkin utility may have an option to "show the key" somewhere, or one of the other Nirsoft utils may be able to reveal the key behind the asterisks.

    Thanks Tony,

Sounds good, I'll not be back there until Wednesday (they're using the admin log on/off fix for now) but I'll get back to you with the results.

LOL, if you were in VA, near Wash, DC, I could show you that WEP key in about 2-4 minutes!

    So could I
    :D

They did consent but looked worried so I thought it would be better to look for other solutions first.

EDIT: They will be educated though ;) from what I recall there is no need for them to use WEP. Whether they switch to WPA or not is at the end of the day their decision. :(

Yup, agreed. Else you'd next end up having to implement WPA on the AP and all computers! Note: Once you get the key, print it & have them store in their office filing system.

To be honest I don't have a problem with that. My advice to them is also voluntary and this group provides great (and needed) services to the community. My problem is the attitude of "you touched it you broke it ".

Who is worse, lawers or vultures (are they the same ;) )

 Did you really think I'd do a homer ;)

Sorry for the delay Tony, I never made it last week.

Just to let you know it worked a treat and the connection is now managed by windows.

    Thanks again

    Very good!
Were you able to grab the WEP key using one of those utils?

Yep, and printed filed away with admin passwords, router (which now has a password) and other information they may require.

I'm trying to persuade them to switch to WPA but they're waiting for a quiet day so things don't get too chaotic whilst the network is down.
