Ok, I'll run those lines and go back to the begining to install or do what I need to. I'm betting it all will work now. But I will post the resuts here. Unless it don't work then I will be back sooner! Right now I have to go make a 50 mile round trip and pick up my son! So the earlyest you would even hear from me again would be later tonight! I'm out of time! Now, go soak your fingers in the most exspensive wine you can buy and eat some choclate. You deserve it! As always have a great day and thank you!

    Good evening,
I thought I would drop a note here as to what I have done so far. I don't want to get to out ahead of myself and get lost!

    Tried to run regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
    Box popped up that said:
shell.dll was loaded, but the dllregisterserver entry point was not found. dllregisterserver may not be exported, or a corrupt version of shell32.dll may be in memory. consider using pview to detect and remove it.

    ran regsvr32 msi.dll
    box said:
    dllregisterserver in msi.dll succeeded.

    ran scanreg /restore
    box said:
cannot restore from windows. shutdown to dos and run scanreg.exe/restore. I did and was successful. No wait! I ran scanreg /restore, is there a differance? Should I redo it?

    ran scanreg /fix
    box said:
cannot repair the registry from windows. shutdown to dos and run scanreg.exe /fix. Again my bad, i ran scanreg /fix.
In dos mode it ran good all the way to 83% then a box popped up that said:
Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up space on your windows drive. If that doesn't work then you will need to install windows to a new directory.

I'm going to go back and rerun those last two again just tomake sure I did it right.

No......don't run scanreg /restore. This was only suggested while previous association mess was problem.

scanreg /fix and space is another subject altogether. I will get back to this, after I screen all possible causes for this. Important that for now you let this lie also. Both of these procedures, if problematic may require you to reinstall windows, which of course you can not do without the cd. Stop poking the tiger.

For now just do those searches related to "windows installer ".

Stop poking the tiger! You made a funny! I was starting to think you were a machine! Well, I ran those two scans again already before I read this. I hope I didn't do any damage! But alright, I'll wait to hear from you before I do anything else. I'll just move along and see what other kinds of animals we have here at the zoo! oops! Almost forgot my stick! LOL SEE YA!

    I'm sorry Buckshotdad1960,

I didn't noticed, until a reread of recent threads, that you said you won't do anything until I post again. I was wondering why you hadn't posted recently. In turn, I was waiting for the information I had asked for.....

Let the scanreg and the registry topics rest for now and let's get back to task at hand, "windows installer" and the determination of the version and condition. As long as you are not having boot/reboot problems or receiving bootup errors or errors/crashes in general, the scanreg issue can be put on the backburner.

Once again: search for the bolded files below, using agent ransack and let me know what you find. Right click on them and from a properties check tell me the version.

    Search for:

msiexec (Notice I did not include an extension. This was intentional)

    instmsi.msi

    Hello goddez1,
No sweat, I've been busy! I haven't noticed any major problems with my computer yet, just the usual. Msiexec is version 2.0.2600.2 but it finds nothing for instmsi.msi!

Still can't get windows installer to work no matter what I do. How do you keep from going crazy being around all these problems! Like in the movie THE DEER HUNTER I've been yelling maow and slapping myself around for over an hour now! I'm up to three bullets in the gun! LOL

Of course you've never seen THE DEER HUNTER and don't get that right?

    Right! OK.

    Good morning,

When you did the search for msicexe.exe where and how many, if more that one, did you find and what path\folder is it in?

That is where it is suppose to be and the latest version available for win98x, hmmmm.

Last ditch effort for this before I assume the problem lies elsewhere....

    Do you
    1. Still have 7zip installed?
    2. Still have InstMsiA.exe sitting on desktop?

    Defrag.exe

What does the rightclick>properties check of the Instmsia.exe indicate this file is. Size 1.62 version 12.0.2600.2?
