From that list I've had my hands on Compaq, Dell, Gateway, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba. My preference is with the Gateways. Like the fact that I get a full operating system disc with 'em too. :)

IBM (now Lenovo) are good. Always have lovely keyboards, which is important when its your main contact with the unit. However, their repair times put me off them. HP was my favourite - solid kit at a good price, but recent ones are just too weighed down with junk software I don't want. But now - Fujitsu. Good solid kit, and a reasonable price. In particular I like:
    • Great support DVDs. Upgrading from preinstalled Vista PC to XP Pro is a breeze. And if you want to put Vista back on, that easy too.
    • Minimum of extraneous applications installed. However, for those that want them, their is a third DVD with them on. So it is the users choice to put the software on - not the manufacturer's: that's the way it should be.
    • Region setting are right out of the box. A small thing, but its is a pain in the bum searching through a new PC for the US settings and altering them for the right side of the pond.
    • The kit feels solid and well made: and this seems to be backed up with no problems arising in the half dozen we've bought in the last year.
    • No complaints from the users - enough to make any IT manager happy. To be left in peace to get on with important tasks like studying Dilbert.

In order of best to worst (includes our experience on the bench):

    Asus
    Alienware
    Fujitsu
    LG
Macbook Pro (ca 2007 and newer)
    HP/Compaq S/B/P series
    Dell Latitude and Vostro
    HP DV9000 (Intel only)
    Toshiba Satellite A100/A200

    HP DV6000 (Intel only)
    Acer Extensa
IBM Stinkpad (before Lenovo trashed them)

And way down at the very, very bottom:

    HP DV6000 (AMD based only)
    Compaq V6000 (AMD based only)
    Sony
    ANYTHING Lenovo

    Dell

Having spec'd and purchased over 100 desktops and laptops in the last few years, I'm with Dell 100%. Not to say that there aren't any great competitive makers out there, but Dell has been there for me more than anyone else.

ASUS---bought it over a year ago---flawless---super nice people a tech support---when I bought it from the Jokers at Best Buy it was the floor model and they didn't have (or so they said) any box or manual or anything else but I kept negotiating the price down and it worked out OK---

Called the good tech people at ASUS answered all my questions an got me a manual and told me if I have any more problems call him--he also stated that the people at B-buy are liars and don't know $#@! about computers.
    I'm happy

I thinks it a tie between Sony Vaio and Toshiba Satellite. Satellite wins since it is my most recent purchase.

I spec'd a Dell (actually several) for a client last year based solely on special pricing at the time. They have been satisfied.

I've had 3 Dells and been perfectly satisfied with them, but I just couldn't justify the high price anymore and went with a HP. The HP has been working fine so I have no complaints with it either.

My sentiments exactly. I went there to buy a laptop they had advertised and walked out of the store after arguing with the manager about their bait-n-switch tactics vowing never to return.

I have an HP Mini w/added 1GB +aToshiba Qosmio X305-Q705. My husband has an HP 32 bit Pavillion. I love them all,but I still need to hook up my 16 bit handheld pocket PC from 2000. The products are usually easier to trust than the retail stores who sell them.

Dell all the way...I personally own four of them and so far they've never let me down.

My place of business uses Dell's and we have quite a few Dell Laptops. One of the items I like the best has been their Service.
