Does your router also have a wired port to plug the printer to?

How did you assign the IP address to printer? Via a Web browser & printer control panel or via printer software?

Did you install the network printer on the laptop? To do so:
    1. Control Panel > Printers & Faxes
    2. Add printer Wizard
    3. select LOCAL Printer & UNCHECK automatically detect & install
    4. select Create a New Port
    5. select Standard TCP/IP port
    6. complete rest of wizard

    What's that?

Try it like I suggested above. The printer MUST get installed via the laptop Control Panel > Add Printer wizard.

What brand printer is it? It should have a Web interface accessable via a browser.

If you've manually set the IP address of the printer THE FIRST THING TO DO is check you have a connection to it - that means make sure you can ping it. If you can't ping it you probably can't connect to it at all.

What is the IP address of your PC?

Larger and/or older network printers can be configured via their front panel. I assume the user is doing that.

Make and model of printer would be very useful
