I'm trying to update a display driver but once I'm on the internet the system crashes. So I don't have enough time to update the driver.
I've been troubleshooting this computer for a while and all the info points to the display driver or the video card. I'd tried saving the update version on a cd from another computer but when I try using it on the problem computer, it
doesn't read the cd. Does anyone have any ideas?

Can you describe the crashes better (error codes, what happens etc)?

What display card do you have?
If onboard what motherboard do you have?

What errors do you get when trying to read the disc?
    Do other discs work?
Is the disc readable in other systems?

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode/VGA only to install the drivers?

crashes not enough time to update driver

After I'm on the internet for a very short time ,the screen goes blank and
the computer restarts itself. The display card is:i81xdnt5. Graphics controller:
Intel(R) 82810E. When I insert the cd in the problem computer, the drive shows an empty disc. I can run the cd in the other computer. I tried booting in safe mode/vga to install the drivers,it didn't work. I also tried safe mode/networking,no success.

Try saving it to a USB stick and run from there on the faulty computer.

There are various reasons why this is not necessarily possible, but in any case a copy of XP from an install CD may only be installed on a single computer.

If you were able to install your copy (retail, not OEM) on your friend's computer you would be unable to activate it as it is already installed and activated on your computer.
