    Hi all

I'm getting frustrated with my updates or the lack thereof.
The Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.788 does not install, therefore no updates are installed at all.
But even before that, since October most updates failed to install, I get an error code 80070246.
I am now missing 5 or 6 security updates, as well as numerous Vista and Media Center updates.
The updates for Windows Defender are installing properly.
I am running Vista Home premium, SP1, Automatic updates turned on.
I already followed some other posts and turned auto update off, then on again as suggested but it didn't help
    Can anybody help?

Hi detlef. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

For all the updates that have been failing try downloading each one manually from the Microsoft website and then install it. Also make sure that you shut down all backround programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar to avoid other problems with installing updates. If those options don't work then follow these steps.

    1. Click Start and type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe (shown at the top of the Start menu) and click Run as administrator. This will open the command prompt.
    2. In the command prompt window type Net stop wuauserv and press Enter. This will stop the Automatic Update Service.
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Reboot the computer.
    6. When the computer starts back up, open Windows Update and force a Windows Update detection and see if you can get the updates to install correctly.

Let me know if those solutions worked.

    Hi

Thanks, Evan Omo, I've tried numerous times but to no avail.

Arie, thank you, I tried to follow your procedure but after downloading the AIK from Microsoft and burning it to a DVD, I get stuck. The DVD is an image file that my computer just does not like and says 'unknown image'.
Is there anything else I can do?

    Try this:

    1. Click Start and type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe (shown at the top of the Start menu) and click Run as administrator. This will open the command prompt.
    2. Type the following command and press enter sfc /scannow.
    3. Let the process run and let me know if it found any corrupted windows files.

You need software to be able to burn an image to CD.

    Hi Evan Omo
It only went to 15% complete, than it said 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

I used NTI CD & DVD Maker 7.0, which came with this computer. It has worked well for me.

Well, every self-respecting burning package should have no trouble burning an IMG file...

Arie, I agree... I am going to try Nero next, if that fails then I must assume that I have done something wrong. I will repeat the procedure
    Thanks

Double check to see if the IMG file downloaded completely.

    Hi Arie
After burning a few useless coasters I realized that neither Nero nor Roxio actually burn IMG files. I was not aware that I had to rename the IMG to an ISO file. After that it worked fine.
However, following the instructions, I am now stuck at the 'mount' command. The message says it cannot find the specific path. I assume it is looking for the common installation media which I don't have. This computer never cam with them, only recovery disks.
Is there a way around this?

There is not "mount" command. It says:

(which is the Make Directory command).

Hi Arie, I explained it wrong

    I followed these instructions:
    # At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER.
    MD c:\Mount
This command creates a folder that is named Mount.
    # Put the Windows Vista installation media in the CD or DVD drive.
    # At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    Imagex /mount DVDDriveLetter\sources\install.wim 1 \mount

    then I get this:

    C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools|PETools>ImageX /mount DVDDriveLetter\sources\install.wim 1 \mount
    ImageX Tool for Windows
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1981-2005. All rights reserved.

The system cannot find the path specified.

    C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools|PETools>

What Microsoft didn't explain to you was that you have to replace DVDDriveLetter with the letter of your DVD drive.

In my case, my DVD drive is G, so the command I used is Imagex /mount G:\sources\install.wim 1 \mount
