Computer: Compac 6016US, 512mb, AMD CPU, Nvidea GF2 integrated video.
This unit is a 2002 era computer.

Using Compaq Restore CDs reinstalled WinXP (no service packs) in a "destructive" (their words) reformat, etc. No apparent problems noted during this activity.

When trying to use IE 6 to go to the Internet to do the usual updating, etc,
the cursor display changes from the usual arrow to the hour glass. No websites can be entered in the address block.

The Internet connection seems to be functioning because a check with Verizon, the ISP, says so. And Microsoft downloaded about 30 updates and I was able to connect to two other computer agencies when attempting to set up programs.

Essentially, I have what I consider to be Internet access but not with IE6.
All of the usual suspects have been checked such as Network settings, etc.

I shall be trying to get a Firefox disk and try to go that route. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options and config IE there. Then try to launch IE. IE's "first run" will almost always load a local Inet Wizard and that wizard may not exist on your comp or may not have installed properly. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945385/en-us

If you can get online with another browser, try downloading IE6 and reinstall.

The computer essentially went back to 2002 and needs to do a lot more than 30 updates. It will want to reboot several times, and it will eventually want to install IE7. What could be happening is that when you click on the IE shortcut, it is trying to locate the factory set page that may not be there anymore (the default home page the OEM put on) Go to tools> Internet Options> general tab and change the homepage to something simple like google and see if that helps when you open the program.

IE8 is still beta, I would wait till the final version has been released.
