PLEASE HELP! i have do research in google with each error occur,
correct way to install ati driver, hardware for my new HD4670. I
really need help, plz read on even thou its long.

Firstly, i online thru my laptop.
2nd, my pc can't go into windows xp even with whatever mode you can
name out.
(last known setting, safe mode, normal mode, i tried all!)

Now i briefly explain things i encounter first and my pc spec.

Dell Dimension 5150, bought like around 2006.
dual core 2.8, intel 945G/GZ, motherboard is OHJ054, BIOS version A05, PSU powerlogic 230w and max can go up to 400w. bought in malaysia.
(never did BIOS or chipset update since date of purchase, shall i do it?)

First of all, my pc kinda lag maybe due to the reason i did not defrag
or protect my pc wisely. and harddisk use up to 80%.
Last 4 day, i bought new ram (2g) and graphic card (HD4670 ddr4 512mb)
and after i insert, i install the driver.
Everything looks fine, graphic looks stunning in desktop, but catalyst
can't run. And i can't run call of duty 4 with my new spec. Everytime
after installing the new/old ccc(driver), the PC hang after start
windows.
After few try of restart, corrupt/missing files start poping up and
can't load windows.

i do a Recover from boot setup with "chkdsk \r \p ", and i able to
start windows again.

1. I keep getting that corrupt after installing OR uninstall driver
after restart pc. and i use the same way to start windows.

2. Installing or Uninstalling ATI driver that moment, sometimes it
hang there for very long (30min) before it finish

3. after research, I think my HD4670 need 400w PSU. thats why the lag
there maybe. So i bought one PSU yesterday, after fit in, i uninstall
my ccc(8.10) driver.

4. this time the lag still there while uninstall, i can run any
application and move window like normal but uninstalation still hang
at that progress. I hit ctrl+alt+del and check the performance bar.
Everything is 0 (even ccc) except this file "set14.tmp" taking up
50cpu.

5. I google that file straight and found out its a virus/backdoor on
only 2 searches in google. I imediately end task it!

6. The uninstall bar continues and goes fast to finish (from 30% to
100%) after 1 min i close that set14.tmp, restart pc after uninstall.

THERE! my pc no longer start since yesterday.
I encounter this error on this link, try the way of solution, and
encounter i can't copy "system" but i can copy the other 4. look at
this link 3/4 of the page and u will understand what i am saying.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

TODAY! google again and most post says that unable to recover and
suggest reformat.

I tried the basic and common way of reformat, delete whole partition,
do partition and format.
(while in the format process, it took like 1 hour ro reformat 15gig
partition, ***?)

After format 100%, it should run into windows installing page. BUT i
get system32/system corrupt/missing again!
***? after REFORMAT i get that corrupt? and of course its missing
since i format it. duh~?

NOW, boot up and go recovery. i use "format c: \fs-ntsc" <- probably
wrong spelling but i get it correct on that computer and format nicely
already. restart....

woo hoo! another problem, now "ntldr is missing, ctrl+alt+del to
restart"

boot with CD...
reinstall... and same result... :)

-----------------------------------------------

I would really need a support here... been fixing for 8hours and its
2am now.
If you notice anything that goes wrong on the above process i go thru,
please state it out. At least i understand and correct my self next
time.

My conclusion guess
1. motherboard burn cause unstable W with my previous PSU.
2. virus/trojan/backdoor? and now still stuck on my harddrive?
3. system32/system is so lucky to be in the bad sector and can't be
wash away?
4. harddisk problem? unstable W cause it to spoilt like the
motherboard as i assume?

I am out of cash after purchasing this few things, please try to
assist me without asking me to get new hard ware >.<

THANKS IN ADVANCE! phew.....
btw.. its windows xp home edition

After i format c: in cmd, it seems windows is completly wipe out due to the word "ntldr is missing ".

Now i tried install xp!

1st attempt, the installation starts, the progress move from 39min left to 27min left and it hang there... for quite some time and it auto reboot.

2nd attempt, installation able to reach 1 min left "it says deleting temp files" and then it freeze there... for like 3 hours now since the installation says "approximately 1min left ".
"Approximately" this word means the time was uncertain, it may be an hour, a day, a week, a month, a year! look how good windows is twisting their words to trick our mind :p

Well, its been 8 hour since my post and no reply yet.
hope someone able to analys with me in this issue.

You must be patient - we are all volunteers here and not all members, even those who post regularly, visit the Board every day.

I suggest that your first move is to check the hard drive with the manufacturer's disk diagnostics ....

ExcelStore ....
http://www.excelstor.com/en/download.asp
Hitachi/IBM .....
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
Samsung ....
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/Support_HUTIL.html
Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum .....
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/
Western Digital ....
http://support.wdc.com/download/

What sort of XP CD are you using - is it the CD from Dell supplied with the computer or is it a copy from a retail CD?

Are you booting from the CD to format and install XP?

Are you sure that the RAM you installed is compatible with the motherboard? Start at the beginning. Replace the old RAM and the old graphics card and see if the installation problem is resolved.

My apologies, i just too eager and anticipate to fix things up and try my new GPU. been fixing 5 days. geez....

well, i encounter 2 more error that xp installing freeze at 33min and 1min.
and able to fix it with some research on google.

after install my xp correctly with no error, i did the hard disk diagnosis. (Western Digital)

Quick scan gives error and the Long scan also error due to (too much bad sector)

make google search straight and most of the peepz say the hard disk is officially dead.

Its already 2 years and 2 month, how long is WD warranty and if no warranty, will they repair it?

and anyone here have idea how to repair it?

(will get hard disk next month cuz i'm totally broke right now >.<)

btw, the RAM is compatible pete :)

As the drive was supplied as a part of your Dell computer WD have no interest in it - from their website .....
So it would seem that you are out of luck with WD and must try Dell Support.
I always ask that question when poster says new RAM has been fitted - the wrong memory can make matters worse :)

Sorry for your predicament, but there is little else we can do - the problem is with the drive :(

Not familiar with that particular diagnostic software - currently use Samsung & Hitachi drives, but I think the simple explanation is in your quote .... quick test on drive 1 did not complete! status code = 07 (failed read test element), failure checkpoint = 65 (error log test) smart self-test did not complete on drive 1

Its possible that the IDE cable is loose or bad, could also be the power connector is loose. Or maybe even the ID jumper block is loose. Likely is a bad drive as PeteC says.

To follow on from TopFarmer's suggestion ....

You have a SATA (Serial ATA) Drive - there should be two cables attached to the rear of it .....

The data cable is a thin flat (or round) cable maybe 1.5cm wide and maybe brightly coloured. Disconnect this from the drive and plug in again - do the same at the connection with the motherboard.

The other connector is the power connector - unplug it and plug it in again.

If this does not resolve the problem - possible, but doubtful, you could try another SATA cable.

Alright, thanks pete. will try when reach home, 2 hr from now.

Just wanted to enquire this...
assuming, dell does not care me because i did not renew the warranty.
So my only option is WD. but they don't give me warranty due to the policy.
Is that possible that i ask WD to repair for me while i bear the repair cost?
and how much will that cost? Market value for this harddisk now is $35.

and btw, pete, are u the one that writes the article for window internet security thingy? Peter Clark?

I doubt it. I will tell you why. I just had a problem with one of my Hitachi SATA drives (getting BSOD's that indicated drive failure), so I popped in my Hitachi tools CD, and it told me that the cable had a problem. So I just had to press the cable in good (I didn't notice it was loose), & I was good to go.

This looks to be a hardware failure.

You don't repair a hard disk, you throw it away & buy new. It is not worth it (i.e. too expensive) to repair it; you probably can't get anyone willing to repair it.

Arie, thank you for the information.
Cause i was thining the repair cost will be cheaper than the market price.
but on my 2nd thought after i post my question hours ago, how would a big manufacturing company bill me so cheaply for them to assign a staff to repair it. and only bill.. umm.. lets see... $20 to $30?
hahaha...

Pete, i love that article of yours. will set up my pc according to your article after i get a new HD :)

btw... tried... change cable, plug in nicely and still consist the same problem.

Very thankful for the replies i get. Keep up the good work *2 thumbs up*

NEW UPDATE~

it seems i am able to resurrect my HD! I learn this method in some other page.
-Boot into recovery
-type "chkdsk /p"
-REPEAT until the word "CHKDSK found one or more errors on the volume" gone from there and should be "CHKDSK has finished checking this volume "
-type "bootfix" and type "y" when it reconfirm to bootfix.
-if everything goes fine. reboot. if still have error, try "chkdsk /r" and repeat those steps.

Well, this method seems strange but it works for me.
I able to go back to windows, update few drivers and restart few times and it seems no more problem / error.

but now this is my question, Why does my window start so slow? bad sector or virus/malware?
when i start before the window logo loading page... there is one line with spaces from left to right at the 3/4 of screen.
And then this line loads from left to right.. eating up the line spaces and become... umm... one line? (as thick as a finger.. not just lines >.<)

well, this 'start up' took at least 5mins to start windows. any idea?

And just minutes ago, i finish download sp3, wanna run it after restart. but the error comes again this time after so many times of restart.
system32/system <--- this again... dang...

actually not much hope on this HD already... but... i really have tight budget and only can purchase one at next month... T.T
if possible.. i really want this HD cure back...

Forget SP3 - be grateful that you have your drive running at all :) SP3 is essentially a rollup of all the patches issued since SP2 - the minor additions are buried deep inside SP3 and do not affect the majority of users.
That is normal under certain situations - I do not know off hand what those situations are, but I have seen it many times on perfectly healthy computers.

I would not be anxious to resolve the slow startup - next month is not far away. If you insist make a repair install of XP - if your CD allows it.

the error you get on the HDD is something physical ... my suggestion is : BACKUP all data that you need on external storage : DVDs / USB / CDs / friends hdds...

after you do that thing...and you ensure that nothing valuable is on the HDD , try HDD Regenerator ( http://www.softaward.com/7605.html ) or froma Hiren Boot CD ( 9.5 - 9.6 ) ...it will take a long time, and most of the time when bad sectors are 2-3 it can solve the problem, when there are too many bad sectors .... it`s not efficient

if you can spot ( using different hdd tools ) where are the bad sectors, you can make 2-3 partitions that isolate those errors in the same "block" ( for example, on your 160Gb hdd you see that 10 bad sectors are in the first 30 Gbs... very easy you create a partition of 35 Gb which you make invisible...and not use anymore )

hope it helps

one more thing, i`ve forgot to say : check Device Manager - IDE ATA/Atapi Adapters - ATAT / IDE 01 ...or something like this ; right click on it - properties - Advance Settings and see how the HDD runs ...

can be PIO Mode, Ultra Ata Mode...

my bet goes on PIO Mode... which is enabled after several points are unreadable and the operating system is dropping the speed on that device ( can happen on CD /DVD that are dirty /scratched ...or on HDD with bad blocks )

Iulius

ps. I`ve had a WD 40 ATA HD that has several bad blocks on different position, so isolation was not possible ... and the only way i manage to "work" with the system was to use a Trial version of Windows 2003 ... which didn`t crashed on a error, instead was closing that specific Explorer / or other program ... ; Xp however gives a direct Blue screen on this kind of problems if they affect explorer.exe . Took me 2 months ( and 2 w2003 reinstalls till i bought a new hdd ..so i know what you feel )

Pete, i don't see any pc that run with that BAR there for a healthy pc. My guess is the HD kind of corrupted and it takes time for windows to read that HD of mine.

ANYHOW.... i bought a new HD already. took some friendly loan with mummy and get it (lol). WD Caviar Blue 320g 16mb.
this is my question... when i plug into my pc... 15gig is gone. When in my windows start up, there is only 305gig left in my hard drive. SHould i complain this to the seller or HD suppose to be like this?
i really need fast answer on this cuz its still under warranty by that shop for a week.

Iulius, i was so grateful and thank you for your respond here. I was indeed wanted and hope can recover my 160g HD so i could make it as a slave HD.

about the HDD Regenerator, it seems to be a shareware. Can it be use as a trial? or any other that is free? and please provide me the steps too. I'm not good in this booting / cmd stuff :p
