Yrs back these 2 software types created conflicts.
I once ran them both and it slowed the machine down to a crawl.
    Is this still true today?

Live scanning will cause slowdowns but with todays processing power you probably won't notice it too much.

What AV and spyware packages are you running? Just in case their are known conflicts.

I'm just switching from Avast to Avira. Got a trojan horse while running Avast, so I no longer trust it. Expect I'll go w/ Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06. Anything free that you'd recommend over this?

For Antivirus I believe its heads or tails with Avira/Avast. For spyware Ad-Aware appears to have fallen out of favour recently, I'd recommend Spybot Search and Destroy

But those are personal opinions and other's may disagree.

Having never successfully used spyware, I really have no clue.

My decision would still be s&d but perhaps others will add there preference.

At the end of the day Chas, it will be your decision. Why not try one and if you don't like it uninstall and try another?

Since Spybot and Ad-aware have different detection databases, and compliment each other well, why not use both? Many people do. ;)

As long as there are conflicts. Have they been worked out so any combination will work?

I can't promise any combination will work, but if (and I think it's a small if) you have problems people here will help resolve them. Try a few and decide what you're happy with.

I have been using Threatfire & Avast for 6 months. No problems till now.

Since most of these products have different databases & different scan techniques, you can run 2 or more anti spyware utils - run one with live scanning & use other(s) as a backup & do manual scan once a week.
