Hi everyone, long time no speak! :)

I am building my mother a budget PC, and have bought an ASUS P5VD2-VM SE motherboard. All seems fine, and I'm installing Windows XP using onboard graphics. It gets through formatting the drive and copying files, then after the restart, the onboard graphics stops working. No signal to the monitor at all. The PC is working away, but I am getting nothing to the monitor. I have done the same thing twice, with exactly the same result.

I can't test it by putting a graphics card in, because I only have AGP cards lying about, and this motherboard has PCI and PCI express slots. I have no intention of buying a graphics card, as my mother will be checking emails on it and that's about it!

Have I missed something? Is there a BIOS option I should be changing?

Thanks in advance for any help (tu)

    Hi BluePeter,

I didn't know you had electric up there, let alone t'internet :D

When you restart do you see the BIOS/Startup screen at all before windows kicks in?

Have you loaded the chipset drivers? though that would be difficult with no display.

Try pressing F8 on boot up as if you were starting in Safe Mode and select VGA - then load the chipset drivers.

You can check in BIOS for 'Enable onboard video', but, if the option is there I guess it would be enabled by default.
Having said that I rather suspect there may be a problem on the mobo, though others may see it differently.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for quick responses.

Wildfire, we just got electric installed, and we're still having teething problems. Normally 2 out of the three houses which have it are working at any one time! :D

PeteC, I've just done what you suggested, and I have a monitor again! I didn't need to load chipset drivers, just selected VGA and *ping* my monitor sprang to life.

I feel a little foolish now, but thanks for your help. :)

The problem was either the GFX drivers (most likely) or the monitor couldn't display 800x600 (unlikely unless a very old monitor). Although things appear ok now I'd still take the time to install those gfx drivers.

The only stupid question is one not asked, but tell that third neighbour to take his turn with the generator ;)

    Hi Rockster,

Good to hear from you. As you can see, I'm still experiencing niggly problems in my quest to figure out how these bl**dy machines work! Hope all is well with you also :)

The machine was up and running with drivers installed when I boxed it up later that night, but the USB ports weren't working. I haven't had it out the box since, but I'm pretty hopeful I'll just need to enable them in the BIOS. I can't think why they would be disabled, but hey ho....

I may be back on asking advice if it's not the simple solution I'm hoping it is (and let's face it, it quite often isn't!)

    Cheers :D
