I just downloaded Firefox 3. It is the first time that I have used or had Firefox at all. I went to a site that I go to all of the time. I do have an Id and password for this site. I put it in and Firefox asked if I want it to save it for me. I told it to do it. It then asked for my Master Password. I have not set one, and when I tried to set one I get the message that I need to enter in the one that was in it already. I do not know what it is. I did try the one that I set for Netscape that I also have and it will not take it. I have also tried to reset it the way the The help section on Firefox says to reset it and it does not work either. Is there another way to reset the Master Password if you do not know what it is when you install Firefox? Or is there a default one that someone knows about? Thanks for any help.

    Hi Sounder53,

Keep in mind that I'm a user who prefers and never used any browser or program feature that stores "passwords" or "form fills ", beyond "cookie remember me's ", and have no knowledge of what a master password reset would effect beyond losing all past stored passwords as well. Repeat, with emphasis: you will lose all stored passwords. These two archived links hold as much as I know on the topic. Since this may be a case of "the blind leading the blind" you may wish to wait for a more informed members input and suggestion.

I didn't see that you had slipped in ahead of me. Been using notepad and archive surfing for info on topic. Once found and finished with notepad response I just posted into topic without a refresh.

I never used a Master password, nor Firefox ever asked me for one. If the settings were imported from Netscape, may be the password was imported from there. The Master password is useful only if you share computer, otherwise it is of no use, and potential nuisance. I would go so far as creating a new profile, importing all other critical files.
Did you see this mozillazine link?

    resettig/setting Master Password.

    Hi Bmoore1129,
Yes the Master Password was ticked. Every time I tried to untick it it kept asking for the Master Password. Or it would keep ticking it again. Today I finally did get it to reset. I now have it set to something that I know what it is. thanks for your help. But now I do not know if it will save any passwords for me. But I'm going to wait and see what happens.

    That's good, Sounder.

That is a good link that Westside posted for the master password problem.

Sometimes it is hard to see the password bar that appears at the top of the page when you enter a password. It always says "do you want firefox to remember this password ". The reason it does that is to give you a chance to not save. For instance, I don't let it remember passwords I enter in my online banking page.

BTW, welcome to the BBS boards. Glad to have you participate....
