    OK, I'll PM my address later...

    Back to work, this is the way you would normally do it but I still don't trust your hard drive so I tried a quick fix if you like that wouldn't cause too much usage of your drive... Anyway

    Right Click On My Computer and select properties

    Select the Device Manager Tab

    Look down until you see mouse.

    Click the + Icon and click on the mouse, then remove...
    If there is more than one mouse listed repeat until there're none left.

    Now reboot Start->Shutdown->Restart

    If the system doesn't restart normally take note of the error and go back into safe mode, let me know what happens

    Restart in safe mode
    then
    start->run msconfig

    Click on the system.ini Tab

    click the + next to [386ehn]

    highlight the mouse= line and then the edit button

    change that line to

    mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vxd

    click the OK Button

    then start->shutdown->restart

    There's other options

    Click Start

    Look at the menu you should see a run option

    click Run

    Type MSCONFIG then press <enter>

    From there look at my previous post.

    i did exactly as you said and when i got to the line you wanted me to change to *vmouse, msmouse.vxd it was already there exactly as that so there was nothing for me to change as it was already identical. then when i went to start>shutdown>restart it brought me that exact same error message that i wrote to you here in message#68..reread that especially paragraphs 3 and 4 about deleted files and restoring the application.
    that LMOUSE.vxd seems to be the stumbling block
    i'll check back later with any thoughts you might have

    Bill, I understand entirely what you're saying but I'm not happy about using your hard drive too much until we're confident that it's healthy.

    However, if you goto start->settings->control panel and select add/remove programs, if any Logitech software is listed try and remove it and keep your fingers crossed.

    I've guests arriving soon and I would be a very poor host if I spent all evening at a keyboard, I'll check back in around 8AM your time and see what progress if any has been made.

    Good luck.

    Start back in safe mode then click Start>Run, type sysedit then hit Enter.
    Select the system.ini window and look for a line that contains the lmouse.vxd entry.
    If found, place a semicolon in front of the line (see example below), close and save the changes.
    Restart normally.

    ;mousedrv=lmouse.vxd

    I don't know about better, but an alternative none-the-less. Great work on this Paddy, and Bill is to be commended for sticking with it and following your instructions so well. Hat's off to you both! :)

    well i did as you suggested and went into system.ini window after sysedit
    I did not see any lines there saying lmouse.vxd;the only mouse findings at all were:
    mouse.drv=mouse.drv found under boot section
    mouse.drv=standard mouse found under boot description
    mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vxd found under 386enh section
    and all greek to me;very frustrating;gotcha watch some football for a break.thanks;i'll read input later

    Have a look in Add/Remove programs as Paddy suggested, and try uninstalling anything Logitech related.

    Check also for any lmouse.vxd entry on the win.ini window in sysedit. If found, let me know exactly how it's listed, but don't change anything yet.

    I did find logitech mouseware8.60 under add/remove programs and i did remove it as paddy suggested;it then asked if i wanted to reboot now??what's my answer?? lol
    I also checked for the lmouse.vxd under win.ini section as you suggested and found nothing even close to that there.
    since i uninstalled the logitech mouse will it be gone now?what will i do for a mouse?

    Yes, reboot now, and allow a normal startup. Your mouse will work fine with the loaded Microsoft drivers.

    error loading atmsys.drv.
    you must re-install windows..
    is this thing just a paperweight??

    Just another minor stumbling block. Relax Bill, we're almost there.....and we will get there. ;)
    Return to the system.ini file in safe mode, sysedit.
    Look for lines similar to the following.

    [Boot]
    SYSTEM.DRV=ATMSYS.DRV
    ATM.SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV

    Replace it with;

    [Boot]
    SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV

    Look in the [drivers] section for the following.

    adobekey=adobekey.drv
    adobemse=adobemse.drv

    and disable them if present by adding a semicolon before each line.

    ;adobekey=adobekey.drv
    ;adobemse=adobemse.drv

    Now have a look at the win.ini file. If you find any entries listed as softfonts= disable those with a semicolon as well.

    Save and exit, then restart normally.

    well i followed your directions and we are getting closer;how is beyond me.lol
    anyway,when i went to system.ini I found both system.drv=atmsys.drv and also atm.system.drv=system.drv and as you said i replaced them both with system.drv=system.drv.
    I did not see any of that adobe stuff in the drivers section and i did not see any soffonts in the win.ini file. i then saved and restarted as you suggested and it automatically went back to the windows 98 setup screen and went through setting up hardware and updates on it's own and then it restarted itself.
    But then an error message appeared saying:
    error starting program. a required .dll PNCRT.dll was not found.

    underneath that i could see the windows 98 welcome window though. also my old screen saver and desktop icons have all reappeared.
    so what does that error message mean and what now? what's your name by the way? and thanks for the assistance;i really think we're getting close cause i can see my desktop screen saver and desktop icons. I'll await your response
