    Paddy we are not out of the woods yet..ugh When i went to shutdown/restart if first went to the previous error screen with the flashing LMOUSE.VXD at the bottom of the screen(scroll back and read the error message it sends with that screen). And from that screen when i press any key to continue as it says it continually brings me back to the windows 98 startup menu where i found the safe mode as choice 3 origanally. Should i try entering choice 1 there as normal when i reach this screen? repeated attempts at shutdown/restart have brought me this exact same way a few times back to that windows 98 startup menu screen. hmmmmm?

    Option 1 command prompt only, and don't worry this is all expected.

    once in command prompt do this

    cd \windows
    copy system.ini system.saf
    [Note the spaces]

    you should get

    1 file(s) copied

    then I want you to type

    edit system.ini

    now in the blue edit window press

    Alt+S then R

    In the search box type LMOUSE.VXD (Use the TAB Key to navigate)

    in the bottom replace box type MSMOUSE.VXD

    Then Select Replace All (Highlight using TAB then press enter)

    Once done close that popup if it's still open then press ALT+F X

    Now fingers crossed, try a restart.

    All the above does is change your Logitech Mouse Drivers for Microsoft one's, as your mouse works in safe mode then the MS drivers will do the job fine in normal mode.

    paddy we were going great guns and then a problem. i followed your directions and everything came up exactly as you said and then by my ERROR i mistyped MMOUSE.VXD instead of MSMOUSE.VXD and then when i went to restart to start over when computer cycled back on it never made it back to the window startup menu but instead i get an error message and flashing cursor that says:
    DISK I/O ERROR
    REPLACE THE DISK AND THEN PRESS ANY KEY

    im unsure why the reload didnt take me back to the windows startup menu and how do i get there again? what disk are they talking about replacing? ugh the battle continues.

    Have you left a floppy in the drive? If so remove it, if not try booting into command prompt only again... TAP f8 and select option one,

    once there

    cd \windows
    copy system.saf system.ini

    and try a reboot, hopefully that LMOUSE.VXD error will return, but it is looking like you'll have to replace that hard drive.

    i did manage to get back to the command prompt only screen and when i went through all the steps and typed MSMOUSE.VXD when i hit replace all an error message came up saying:
    edit was unable to find a match and then an OK screen

    i feel this is very close to returning to operation because when safe mode loaded earlier all my desktop icons had returned to the screen. we are so close i think, but unsure what next step would be to return to normal desktop?? any ideas or do you really think my hard drive is damaged beyond repair?

    OK from the top, restart your system with command prompt only...

    cd \windows
    del system.ini
    copy system.saf system.ini

    then try my previous post instructions with some modifications ie

    If that doesn't work Do not do anything else

    Get back to me I'll we'll try something else.

    i tried your amended instructions and at the bottom of the screen when i hit replace it said once again:
    edit was unable to find a match but for yout information at the bottom of that blue screen, C:\windows\system.ini the last line says:
    mouse.drv=mouse.drv whatever that might mean..

    OK, we'll go back to the edit window

    Restart in command prompt only

    cd \windows
    edit system.ini

    now using the cursor keys scroll down until you see

    [386enh]

    below that you should see a line similar to (it may be a few lines below)

    mouse=*vmouse, mmouse.vxd

    That bit in bold maybe lmmouse.vxd etc,

    change it to msmouse.vxd so to confirm the line should read

    mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vxd

    now Alt+F and S

    Try a restart now Bill.
