I think this WD1600JB drive has had an electronic failure, not a mechanical one. It started ticking once per second, and I could not access the drive. Now, when I boot up, the Promise card cannot detect either drive on the IDE channel I'm using. If I remove the damaged drive the card recognizes the remaining drive. Can I replace the circuit board with one from another WD1600JB drive? It is doubtful if I could find another drive with the same six-character extension to the model number, but is this fatal?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)
In theory, yes if you have the skills, but the replacement board must be from a drive exactly the same as the failed drive down to the last digit.

And even then I would only trust the drive enough to recover the data, the replacement board may have different firmware.

I have done this is the past with Maxtor drives so it is possible but not recommended. In saying that the ticking indicates mechanical not electronic to me.

I agree with Wildfire - the clicking noise reminds me of the Iomega Zip "Click of Death" which was the advance warning of a hardware failure for many users.
