I've a laptop with a broken LCD screen, it's not worth repairing but I do have a spare monitor and I was wondering if the laptop would still work if I completely removed the LCD panel? It works fine with the external monitor but it's a little awkward to use with the broken screen in place.

It's an old Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600

I believe that the start button is on the outside of the machine (as opposed to having to open the screen to push the start button),

I know that this works on an older ThinkPad I own and it's worth a try. If you set the screen choice to CRT (external) via Fn and likely F7, close the lid and restart it should come back using the external monitor.

As an alternative I found this for $50

The power on/start button is on the side yes.

    It does but...

Perhaps a misunderstanding, I don't want to close the lid, I'd prefer to remove the lid entirely. The plan is to use the remains of the laptop and an LCD monitor in the kitchen (where space is a concern). I don't want to use an external keyboard or mouse.

    Thank you anyway. :)

    Ah, you're right. A misunderstanding.

I don't know but it is likely worth the try to remove it. You can always put it back together.

I tend to take the bull by the horns and deal with the outcome afterward :D

So do I, I was just looking for some moral support :D

I'll go ahead with it anyway when I have time unless someone tells me it will not work :)

Hi, I would get a PDF of the laptop workshop manual first to see what connection would need to be disconnected internally with regards to the LCD screen. I mention this as I have an old Compaq Notebook and there is quite a lot of work to do to disconnect the Display Cable from the System Board. I don't know whether you could cut the Display cable, but obviously the cover will stay with the Laptop unless you disconnect the cable! LOL. Neil.:D

Exactly, it's an intricate job and not worthwhile unless you have a reasonable chance of success. FWIW I wouldn't recommend this if someone needed the laptop but fortunately it's a spare and I have 4 other systems to use.

It's just annoying that when the football (soccer for you yanks :) ) is on and I'm busy cooking I cant keep up to date with the scores :(

We Colonials (read: Canadians) are not all neophytes you know...:p My Scouser / non-techie wife would sympathize with you. She has to turn up the volume on the TV when Liverpool is playing in order to keep up from the kitchen or miss the action altogether (and that ain't about to happen )

I remember searching for a FRU manual for a customer with a 4600 for a couple of hours a few years ago. I found a pictorial document but don't have the URL. I did have the good sense to save a copy in My Documents though. Let me know if you would like it and I can email it to you.

Thanks to cspgsl and an unexpected free couple of hours this afternoon I can say that the laptop's running fine without the LCD Panel or lid.

I've still got the brackets on (no need to remove them folded down they don't go near the keyboard) and the video and wireless antenna(sp? I'm Scottish :D ) cables but they're easily tucked under the base.

Thanks for everyone's input especially cspgsl.

FWIW what I thought would take an hour or so only took 5 minutes.

IMO no but there's to many people out there that think Dundee FC and Dundee United FC are the same club, and then you have others that think United must mean Manchester United (who only beat us 1 goal out of a 9 goal thriller BTW). TBH I think Barcelona (Lost 4 out of 4 against the United) wouldh've prefferred to play against Man U.

Ask your scpouser ;) if she remembers when they played AS Roma in the final of the European Cup when it should've been Dundee United.

Anyway this is way off topic but if you wish to continue in general I'll pop in and carry on.

I would but I'm likely out of my depth... well, mostly for sure.

My profundity extends to Angela's Saturday and Sunday morning screams of pleasure and disdain at Setanta while I calmly try to work away on my various web projects.

She is no fan of Benitez, that's for definate
