I know that there are updates due for Win 2K because I have downloaded and installed them on my own PC. However, when I go to the usual Microsoft update page on my wife's PC, using Start->Windows Update, I get a standard Microsoft screen to say that there is a problem connecting to that page. No error code is displayed.

    Message reads :

" The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
    For self-help options:
    • Frequently Asked Questions
    • Find Solutions
    • Windows Update Newsgroup
    For assisted support options:
    • Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues) "

I then re-try on my own PC and there is no problem connecting to the update page. A re-try on my wife's PC then still shows up as a connection problem.

Any ideas on how to solve this riddle?

Oh, yes. That was the first thing I did. Sorry, I should have said so.

These links all had suggestions for messages which came up with an error code - not relevant to the message I was getting. (No error code.)

Profuse apologies, Steve. I must get new reading glasses - there is an error code showing (in greyed out mode so I missed it earlier). Code Ox800706D3.

I'll investigate that before taking up more of your time.

    Hi beejay

    OK lets start here:

Sometimes the temps can cause an issue with winupdates so cleanup!

    Cleaners

D/L install and run ATF-Cleaner clear all except passwords in all browsers you have. Run repeatedly until no more found.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

D/L and install CCleaner: Clean temps and registry. Run both (temp and registry) repeatedly until no more found.
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds get Slim version
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Then

    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file.

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do the below

    Reinstall BITS
    Repair Permissions

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Your ball!

    Mike

Thanks Mike. I used Reg Vac and it found many errors. I'll follow up your suggestions and see what happens.

Registry cleaning would not normally fix this issue. Good for house cleaning in general tho!

Do not run Reg Cleaners back to back without a reboot.

So reboot before running CCleaner Registry cleanup in my last post.

    DAF should fix your issue!

    Thanks for your further tips.

BTW, I note that your earlier post makes reference to XP. Does your advice still apply for Win 2K, the actual O/S on the machine?

Find error code(s) associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log (800706D3 in this case), and post relevant information.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

For more information see: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

    Do Arie's post first!

But DAF does work for all NT Class Operating systems and this includes Win2K so proceed!

Thanks for both replies, Mike & Arie. Using Arie's suggestion first I now attach an extract from the Windows update log (full log is too long to include). All gobbledygook to me but maybe you can interpret it and suggest a solution?

    Extract follows :

    Looks like a permission problem

I would try running DAF as Mike suggested, and see if that fixes the issue.

I'm afraid to say that running DAF had no success.

    Try this:

    • to Start > Run type DCOMCNFG
    • Click on the Default Security tab
    • Under Default Access Permissions click on Edit Default
    • If the list is blank, click ADD then click on Administrators and then click OK

    Reboot & try WU again.

Sorry, Arie - that "fix" did not improve matters.

OK, so one other (extensive) try left:

    1. Open a command prompt: go to Start > Run and type cmd in the Open box, click OK
    2. Stop Automatic Update Service; type Net stop wuauserv (press Enter) .
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Download & Install the latest Windows Update Agent*
    6. Force a Windows Update detection and see if that works.

*) If you receive a message stating the Update Agent is already installed follow these extra steps:

    1. Click Start > Run and click the Browse button
    2. Navigate to where you saved WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe & click it one time
    3. Click on the Open button
    4. On the Open line, go to the end of the command. After the last quotation mark type the following /wuforce
    5. Click OK and the Update Agent should install

Thanks for staying with this issue. The first 6 steps went through fine and WAG was downloaded. I did, however, receive a message to say that WAG was already installed and so I followed your 5 further steps.

At step 5, however, when I clicked on OK I received a pop-up error message to say that :

Cannot find the file ' "C:\Documents and Settings ...... \WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe "\wuforce' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required linbraries are available.

    Any further ideas?

Thanks Mike. I have now pasted these links into the IE trusted zone and rebooted but I still am not being allowed into the windows update site or the update history page.

    Any further suggestions?

One thought - I have another WIN 2K PC which gets the updates without problem. Are there any files which I could cut and paste from that PC to this PC to get round this problem?

Copying from another computer is possible but complex there are better ways to get updates without winupdate.

OK you must have other issues. Do below in order presented.

You need to redo Arie's post as you had the wrong slash (\wuforce).

    It should be /wuforce.

If you get this done it will be ready when you get access to the site.

Sometimes the temps can cause problems with winupdate so do the below:
    Cleaners

D/L install and run ATF-Cleaner clear all except passwords in all browsers you have. Run repeatedly until no more found.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

    D/L and install CCleaner:

Clean temps and registry. Run both (temp and registry) repeatedly until no more found.

    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds get Slim version

Lets also check for other possibilities:

    ==========================================

    D/L Xclean_Micro http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe

No install, run it delete all it finds decline to reboot on each item found, until the program finishes then reboot.

Xclean will run minimized and will pop up a window if it finds anything. If it finds nothing it will exit.

Please make a note of what it found if any as this might indicate a deeper Malware diag.
    ==========================================

Get the below install then update then run FULL scan and then post log

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

If it found much the reboot to Safe Mode and run it again then paste new log for this run when back to normal mode!

    =========================================

    Finally:
To look deeply at you system:

    D/L RSIT http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe
Run it post BOTH logs here.

    Mike
