Windows Vista Now that SP1 has been available 6 months, what are your Vista plans?

In reading this entire Thread I think ReggieB has it pegged.

It is convoluted on purpose by M$ just to make it seem to be different from XP!

When it comes down to it Vista has little that XP don't and most of these can be added to XP!

Hence the biased so called Mojave project could just as well been XP with an Areo clone and a few other added flashy effects and the results would have been the same.

I have one machine that uses Vista Ultimate. I basically use it when remotely helping someone with Vista.

I just don't use it often. But I do keep it updated.

It has been tweaked by disabling unneeded services, windows classic view UAC in silent mode etc.

It is OK and I have noticed much better than some of the lower versions like Vista Home.

But Vista still has some flakyness like just seemingly dropping shares and losing network connectivity and hard to get back.

It still causes problems in mixed network environments. Sometimes just having a Vista machine on a mixed network causes issues with the other stations.

I will say this is likely caused by trying to use the lower flavors of Vista like Home which was not designed for Corporate networks.

Read the Threads here and comments on the WWW and you will find those happiest with Vista are single computer home users.

Those most unhappy are Corporate network users.

Vista Home Premium hard wired network home user. Four pc's in the place. One Vista and three XP's. I just learned to let McAfee Security Center handle the network basics, with the Vista pc being the boss.
Went hard wired because it is faster, secure and solves losing network connection issues. Also have cable modem and router plugged into APC power back system since I am in a tropical zone with many thunderstorms.

Just do it!

If you have had any pc for even 10 years, you know that you either go to Control Panel or the Program list above the start button and uninstall it. A minority of programs lists the Uninstall WITH the program name there.

It warned you? So what. Who runs the pc? It or you? Just uninstall it, ignore the "OMG you are wide open to viruses!!!!" panic warning message, get everything you need to uninstall out of there and put a basic, simple Anti Virus named whatever in there and get on with computing.

Turn Firewall back on, download Defender, update one thing at a time and realize that worst case scenario is that you have to go back to a previous working Restore Point and do parts of this again.

Even if you don't get the most expensive antivirus or the most well touted, just have a different antivirus right there and get on with computing life.

 

I will probably shift to Mac or Linux, rather than use Vista.

 

Why can't Microsoft get things right before they sell a new OS? If it was a car, they would be closed down by the regulators.

Am I alone in remembering how absolutely buggy XP Home was back in the day? It seemed like 98 just got sorta debugged and then along came XP Home and it was one thing after another. It was different looking, sounding acting and some things it didn't want to do and it did other things. I wished I'd gotten Pro.

I'm also old enough to have had an Apple II+. Yep. Got abandoned when Mac came out.

LOL, I still remember an instructor many years ago showing me why they call the thing a mouse. I still remember my first pc, turning it on and it asking me "Where do you want to go today?" or something like that. I unplugged it and it survived!

I learned. I persevered. I swallowed my panic at the first blue screen of semi death.

Figured out how to back up important stuff and keep the OS disks (remember floppies?) handy. Crashed a few. Installed my first RAM and so forth.

Bottom line, backup important stuff, keep OS and important software handy IF needed and on your standalone or home pc, remember who owns it and who bought it and don't let the little critter beat ya!

 

You are absolutely right. XP Home and Pro were it for something like 8 years, if I am correct. Compared to what I remember of 95, 98 and XP for the first few years of debugging while trying to use them, Vista Premium and/or Ultimate is a piece of cake. Vista Basic was really bad.

 

Well in 1981 IBM introduced the its first "IBM PC ". The computer had a 8088 processor, 16 KB of memory, which was expandable to 256 and utilizing PC-DOS.

There was also the CP/M operating system using the 8" Floppy Disk?

After IBM got tired of fooling with their operating system, PC-DOS, they asked Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak who earlier had created one of the first commercially successful personal computers if they wanted to take over development of their PC-DOS software for their IBM PC. They turned IBM down so they went to the three school chums working out of a two car garage and asked them. They agreed and immediately PC-DOS became MS-DOS and history was born.

In 1985 they released Windows 1.0 which was originally going to be called Interface Manager but decided on calling it Windows 1.0 because it sounded more appealing to consumers. Windows 1.0 was not a complete operating system, but rather extended MS-DOS. As a matter of fact Windows was not well received until Windows 3.0 was released but even then it was still not a complete operating system.

It wasn't until the Windows 95 was released in 1995 that Windows became a complete operating system. Back then those of us that were proficient in Windows 1.0 to Windows 3.11 were referred to as DOS-Heads. even now when someone brings me a disk to find something I occasionally go to DOS and look for it.

Life before Windows, much more simple.

 

Been using it since January, will never look back. XP was nice but with the right hardware Vista IMO is many worlds better...

 

Even after a baaaad Vista Basic experience, I have had Home Premium since last Xmas and I now find it beats XP in any form.

i have been using vista for 4 months,it annoys me in that it is not as stable as xp and you have to be so carefull with everything you do, i now have lost my thumbnails and am having trouble restoring them has anyone any ideas.ken

 

Had been wanting to purchase new/larger pc and kept putting it off, because of Vista! Heard so many horror stories and bug tales that I just couldn't stand the thought of giving up my Windows XP! So, finally found a place to purchase exactly what I want with NO VISTA!!!! Windows XP installed as the primary (and only) OS, so I'm thrilled!!!

Have a trip to go on, and have put off the new computer purchase until our return, then I'm getting exactly what I want!!!

 

For your info, Norton has a Removal Tool you can download from their site, and it will erase nearly all versions, including any references in the registry.
