Windows XP reinstall

Hi guys,

I would really appreciate your help here, im living in Germany and without my laptop all i have to do right now is watch The simpsons in German!!!

OK so i had an error message telling me that one of my system 32 DLL files was corrupt, windows still worked fine the only program affected was internet explorer, i couldnt browse!

So my brother sent me a disc with Windows XP professional to reinstall, when i loaded it up i chose the update option (this was recommended) rather than total install.

It took about 4 hours but finally completed, BUT then i got messages telling me windows could not start because of an error in the software. Load needed for DLLs for kernel.

these were the files: system32/ntoskrnl.exe
system32/hal.dll
system32/KDCOM.DLL

i also got another message, blue screen, saying the problem seems to be caused by the following file: setupdd.sys

i tried to reboot from the disc to enter a recovery mode, and do scan disk etc but it wont even let me do that!!!
Im totally and utterly stuck!!!

What operating system is on this laptop before you tried to upgrade ?

 

its Windows XP Home Edition...

The DLLs may relate to an OEM system that might only work by reinstalling the original (Recovery) installation of Windows.

I suggest running the installation again. Check in the BIOS/Startup configuration settings that the CD drive is set to boot before the hard drive and watch carefully for the option "Press any key to boot to CD ".

Let us know how it goes, I think I have seen those errors, but it wasn't yesterday

i have tried booting from the disc, i pressed any key when it told me to and it gave me three options: continue current installation, quit current installation to begin a new one, or quit installation and run windows.

i have tried each option!!

when i continue the current installation it takes me to the set up, and starts again but stops, telling me the dll files are corrupt.

So i think now my only option is to get hold of my original xp disc ???
meaning i have to wait a month until i go home for a few days!

Or is it worth taking it to a repairer here do you think?

For me, you will need to quote the error message in each of those options.

Others that might know that error combination could respond .

OK so when I start up without the disc in i get this:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the 1st time you've seen thus stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drive controllers. Check your harddrive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart.

But i cant actually do any of these suggestions, literally all i can do is turn on read the errors then it automatically restarts and goes in a loop like this.#

If i run from disc, i can continue current upgrade, which when i enter it tells me set up cannot access the CD containing the XP installation files (!?!? first time it said that)
then it says retry and if unsuccessful quit setup. then to restart set up and copy installation files to your hard disk !

Again - i cant physically do any of these suggestions!

I have the original disc which i got with the laptop, and which i used to install windows, on the way to me so will have that next week. Im PRAYING that will fix it ???

You can probably see what I mean about needing the original (OEM) disk.

When it restarts, watch carefully for the screen "Press any key to boot from CD ". That should allow you to boot to the Windows disk and try again, but somehow I think you will need to use the OEM recovery disk.

If you use the recovery disk be careful in case it is going to overwrite your current system

yeah i should have my original disc by the weekend so i shall try it and let you know how it goes!
