I run Win XP Pro, and just installed IE 8 Beta. Since that I cannot open IE. It opens for a few seconds and promptly closes before anything loads.
I re-downloaded IE7 which worked fine before this and the same thing happens. It too opens and promptly closes also now.
I only us IE for doing MS updates otherwise I use Firefox.
I did install Google Chrome just before that and IE apparently disabled that too because the .Exe file for Chrome disappeared. I have since re-downloaded and installed that and Chrome works fine again.
Anyone have any idea how I can get IE to work so I can do my updates.
    Thanks.

Go thing you didn't do this on a mission critical machine....Formatting the drive might be on your list of things to consider.

Did you by any chance attempt to UNinstall IE8?

Thanks, Steve. You just sent me into depression with the formatting suggestion. LOL. I'm going to ignore that for the moment although believe me it has crossed my mind.

Uninstalling also crossed my mind but I don't know how to do that. It certainly isn't on my Add/Remove programs list.
Can you help with that. It certainly would be a more palatable solution.
    Thanks for the speedy reply.

You made not only one, but two beta mistakes: IE, and Chrome.
I hope, you can sort it out.
    Do you have SP3 installed?

Broni, yes I do have SP3 installed. My add remove programs list shows IE7 but doesn't have an uninstall option. One other thing I've now noticed, is that when I try to open Internet options from the Control Panel, nothing happens.

    That's it, Pete.
I went into the above situation. Luckily, it's on my test XP installation, so no big deal here.
Besides, everything is working fine, so I have no reason to worry.
I wonder if floyd had beta1 installed before.

OK. This is what the article refers to, and this when you got in trouble.
    You're stuck, if:
    1. Installed IE8 beta 1, then,
    2. Installed SP3, then,
    3. Installed IE8 beta 2.
The above is my case, but from what I understand, you've never installed IE8 beta 1, correct?

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions. I had SP3 installed for a long time. Downloading IE8 was the problem.
I couldn't uninstall it because it did't show uo on the list. Here is what I did to fix it.
    1.Uninstalled SP3
    2 Reinstalled IE7.
    3.Reinstalled IE8.
    4.It then ran OK.
I then did a Windows update and installed 13 updates as instructed. SP-3 was not on the list.
Everything now seems to be working just fine including Firefox and IE8. Don't know what happened to SP3, but I'm assuming I no longer need it as it doesn't show up on the updates list.
    Once again thanks all.

It sure is interesting in reading about people's experiences.

I have Vista Home premium and if a browser has been presented, I have tried it like Opera, Maxthon, IE7, IE8, New Google Chrome, Firefox and a few others.

Before I install any new software that seems mission critical, I do a backup using system restore and if anything happens then you can restore to a previously working mode.

But in fairness, I have installed IE8 and Chrome without any issues. Don't really see all the hype about Googles browser. It is great for plain browsing but lacks a lot of features that I need in my main browser (FireFox)

    Uninstalling IE8 beta

If you are trying to uninstall IE 8 beta, it is not under programs, instead it is under Windows updates, at least in VISTA. I guess MS considered it an update.

I installed ie8 beta also. It was not compatible with google updater, so I tried to uninstall ie8. I did a system restore to a point before, but now when I try to open ie, I'm getting application errors. the instruction of 0xdf0002c referenced memory at 0xdf00002c memoroy could not be read, or 0x77c46fa3 at 0x0349f000. Or ie will start to open, then close in a couple of seconds. Is there any way that I can uninstall ie7 with out losing the favorites I have already saved

    dmrvis1 - Welcome to the Board :)

Uninstalling IE7 rolls you back to IE6 - your favourites will not be affected.

For safety though Export your Favourites to another location on your hard drive from where they can be imported if required. (File > Import and Export - follow the wizard through).

I have windows xp. IE8 was in my program files in the windows folders. I deleted that, and ran spybot S&D, but I still can't get IE to work. I had to use Netscape to access web site, but I prefer to use IE because I already have my favs sites saved, and I have several add on such as google toolbar & updater, yahoo toolbar, and billeo toolbar in IE. Help please, I need my IE.
