Is there some way to get messenger to NOT open, at all, when checking a hotmail account via IE7? Its a royal pain in the butt when i ONLY want to check email and dont give a hoot about messenger for the time being. I have already unchecked "open windows live messenger when i click on a link on a webpage that tries to interact with windows live messenger "

but this does NOTHING when using actual hotmail. there must be SOME way to stop it from automatically opening. It doesnt sign in, but its a pain having the page take longer to load because messenger is trying to load at the same time....

someone help? please?? is there some setting within my hotmail account that i can shut off??

    Option Tools

    Hi Mel,
just installed msngr live so I could test the options in it :) I haven't used messenger for ages and my kids aren't allowed to use my computer, so I don't really need it ;)

1: Open msngr live; If you don't have the menu bar?
    click 'help'; show menu bar

2: from the menu bar click 'tools', click 'Options'

3: click 'general'; uncheck "automatically run windows live messenger when I log on to windows "; click OK

4: on main window (msngr) uncheck all but 'remember me' from there close or whatever

I also went into add/remove programs, windows components, & removed windows messenger (the old version) as this one interacts with things like explorer & outlook.

    Hope this helps
    Regards Jac

Just a quick note, msngr still pops up on the taskbar (the one nearest the clock) but it doesn't sign in, if you set it the way I explained, it disappears when I exit the inbox though??
    best luck Jac

is this the one??? "Stop Windows Messenger from Auto-Starting "

is it the same as windows live messenger???

it is usually just in the corner and doesnt sign in, but the other day when my mom was checking her hotmail it signed me in... so i really dont need that happening again. luckily im always appear offline anyway, but still.

it never has the problem with my hotmails because i use outlook express, and i just used the options in there to stop it from running.

I have tried unckecking "automatically run windows live messenger when I log on to windows" which makes it not start up, but it still wants to run when hotmail in IE is opened.

but youd think with unchecking "automatically run windows live messenger when I log on to windows" and "open windows live messenger when i click on a link on a webpage that tries to interact with windows live messenger" it would only ever open when i double click the desktop icon (or start menu, etc). but, it still opens when my mom checks her hotmail. its annoying even if it doesnt sign me in.

Ive even tried looking around in my hotmail account options on IE to see if theres some setting in there to make it not associate with messenger, but i couldnt find anything.

    Hi again,
I set mine the way I described and it doesn't open messenger, but at the moment I only have one livemail/hotmail account on my system, the son will be down on the weekend & he's the only that uses my computer apart from me, he's no longer allowed to download stuff but (likes to use uTorrent) so I will see what happens then.
I'llkeep an eye on the thread to see how you go
    Regards Jac

I thought you said it loads to the taskbar? I still consider that opening when the program wasnt open/started at all before checking hotmail.

something else i noticed. i checked my hotmail at my brothers today using firefox, and their messenger didnt automatically open to the tray. is it something within IE thats doing it?? I use slimbrowser but it uses IE's settings.

I'll paste it from the page, it does involve editing the registry.

    Similar but not the same?

Yes I found that annoying, but it is only opening an active link, not opening the actually program or signing you in, and it doesn't slow down my system.

Now what I would like to know is how do I stop my Hotmail opening (without me signing in) when I close the page/tab, DO I actually need to sign out first?, as I will close my mail page but leave IE open when I go off to do something else (you know the fun stuff like feeding the dogs, going down the shops, cooking dinner) and when I come back to the computer later, I will click on the shortcut & I'm back?
