"Internet guy ", not what I would describe myself. I might have some areas to look at.

That Citrix GoToMyPC opens a lot of programs that will start wanting to be ready for full remote control. It would be the first thing I would suspect for slowing internet connection. (It may not be the actual program, but the security systems may be wanting to watch what it is doing).

I can't see what firewall is operating. If a firewall has been told to block a program, the program can just keep trying to make a connection.

If you are relatively experienced, you probably don't need Spybot Teatimer running, it is a "check everything" program. I only install it for beginners. Look for more than one program doing the same job, like Teatimer and some other internet "watcher ", they can conflict with each other.

I would uninstall GoToMyPC and Spybot. See how the system worked, then reinstall them and see what happens. If the firewall is configurable, check what programs it is blocking (or not blocking?...it may need to be configured).

    Thank you, Matt.

While I may not agree, GoToMyPC is absolutely necessary. He of All the Toys leaves quite often for weeks at a time and must check in, QuickBooks, Quicken, and he has a fear that he will miss an important piece of email.

The only firewall is Windows firewall; I removed Norton because it kept shutting down GoToMyPC every time it upgraded. That may be less than secure on my part, I am open to suggestions. The router is set to ClearSailing, and I do not have any knowledge of NATs, pinholes or the like.

the two operators of this machine are complete newbies, even after 8+ years.

I just reran NortonRemove, thinking it may still be lurking and doing this. But something is blocking the initial load. Once on a site, the second page does load fairly fast, but it is the first page on EVERY site that takes 2 minutes or so to load.

As long as you had the GoToMyPC installer package, I would try uninstalling, testing and reinstalling. Spybot may work better with a reinstall of the latest version. Constant patching of those types of programs can always use a "spring clean" in my opinion.

Poking around the edges and saying "maybe it's this or maybe it's that" doesn't go very far with me. I am not saying to do without those programs, but I would test them.

I'm following instructions this time. So tomorrow, I'll do so.

Does the computer's IP address start 192.168?

Run ipconfig /all at the cmd prompt (Start > Run and enter cmd) and look for the IP address set as the DNS server. Do the same on couple of other PCs that don't have the slow internet. Do they all have 'DNS server' pointing at the same IP address?

Not necessarily instructions. You can choose to ignore any of my suggestions. I feel those are the programs that would require attention (my opinion). Uninstalling programs may not always be 100% successful, but I have always found that reinstalling the same program again afterwards, or upgrading, has always been successful. If I think that reinstalling (and/or upgrading) the program may help, I take it.

From my point of view, those reinstalls could be the answer, since it is occurring when "something new" happens with the internet connection. Extending my theory, it could be due to some of the other internet (security?) programs.

My opinion is that if you have a problem, but if you are unwilling to make to make any changes, the problem will never be fixed.

I don't work on instructions. I would prefer you to investigate the problem and find a solution for yourself.
    :)

Matt: Ok, we'll use "good directions" instead of instructions.

Uninstalling Spybot seems to have sped up the initial load page. Right now I can't uninstall GoToMyPC, as HOATT can't find his license number, it's somewhere, but where??? It is taking roughly one minute to load the initial page, whereas before it was 3 minutes, including home page.

Reggie-Tomorrow I'll look. I have to go do my real job right now. I just hate it when reality gets in the way of life. ;)

    yes

yes, all have DNS server pointing to the same address BUT the slow one has a couple of extra lines
And more little oddities, our MLS program will not update, Windows updates can not be installed (.NET Framework) and a scan with a registry editor consisitently shows the same 384 errors.

    Found it, Found it!! :)

Disabled Microsoft Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), no change. Uninstalled Microsoft Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and it works!!! Page loads are normal, maybe even spiffy.

Will try updates tomorrow, see what happens with that, but I was too busy doing "the happy dance" that I forgot to check on those.

Thank you thank you THANK YOU. It was the good directions I got here that made it possible. :D Oh, happy days, oh happy days!

Well, happy dance has slowed down. Windows updates will not install, nor will the MLS program.

Wonder if partial cause could be the SP3 update that wouldn't install?
