when I pull up any of the windows from the control panels, ie power options, or display, the window comes up but it is "transparent ", I can see through it whatever is behind it. Has anybody seen this or know how to correct it?
Everything works but it's kind of annoying.

Most likely either a setting in your display adapter driver, or else you may want to update your display driver.

I think I fixed it at least for now, some setting in appearance, there's a box about shadows and windows.

Uninstall the current driver, then install the new one.

    Kill the machine!

Seriously, I'd install the latest driver I could find. Preferably from the manufacturer's website.

But why only with these windows/. Incidentally when I pull up the windows security window, and click on the top of the bar, the see through effect goes away on the other windows. When I click off the securtiy window, it comes back.

I have an HP, should I look on their site for a driver on their site. The current driver is NVIDIA GE FORCE FX 5200

    Not Sure.
Sounds like you have the current driver. Did you unintall and reinstall per Arie's instruction?

Yes I did, It may be something I'll have to live with. It seemed to have happened after I played around with power schemes tab on power options properties, but I don't see anything there that should have affected it. I currently have it set on energy star, I had it on always on previously

If you got a NVIDIA card just go to the official website, NVIDIA, and select option 2, then it will detect if you got the latest driver or not, if not then the update driver will be available to download.

installed the new driver, same problem. If I just open the nvidia control panel,
the transparency goes away, but I shouldn't have to do that.
