Thunderbird & Hotmail - do they gel ?

Currently I am using hotmail with Windows Live Mail. I would like to upgrade to Thunderbird but I don't have a confirmation whether Thunderbird supports hotmail directly or through some other means [like ypops with yahoo].

Any ideas ?

 

I should be able to use Hotmail (I don't have an account) using freePOPs .
Hotmail is, like Yahoo in most cases a form of webmail which cannot be set up in a normal mail program. Of course Hotmail and LiveMail are Microsoft product, and would be expected to work.
In my experience the set up of such accounts may go on for long time, or not. Yahoo has been working years, till July 25, and, then it stopped accepting its password, using freePOPs. Generally, they make changes so that this set up cannot be used.

 

Hi rsinfo, I have Firefox and Hotmail is showing directly below the Address line as a quick link. I just click on Free Hotmail and it goes to it where I can check my Hotmail but when I logout, it goes to MSN browser and not back to Firefox. It is a bit of a pain but I haven't worried about it till I saw your post.Neil.

what you observed plus a few other reasons is why I stopped using Hotmail.
However, could Hotmail be set up in Flock, which is a relative of Firefox? I set up Yahoo, AOL ans AIM mail, using their mail feature. Otherwise, the point is to use a mail program, and Firefox is not a mail program.

I indeed want to use an email program [Thunderbird in this case] and not a web browser.

Though Windows Live Mail works with Hotmail, its slow.

 

Important update

Thunderbird works with all major webmails including Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL etc. with extensions.

I tried it & it worked beautifully but had to remove it as it could not import messages and address book from Windows Live Mail.

Keeping my fingers crossed for ver 3.0. May be then

 

You don't have to log in to see all the problems are encountered by several people

. Just scroll down to find Hotmail issues. Whoever offers Webmails of any kind does its darnest to have people use the website (or their preferred mail program).
All I can say is that one can set up a Webmail using freePOP or similar program, and receive mail as a POP account.
It may work for long time, or poorly, or not at all. It has nothing to do with the mail program, but only with whoever offers the Webmail.

 

True, but I have been using YPOPS for downloading my mails from yahoo for last 4 years. Sometimes yahoo breaks it, but the people at ypops scramble to set it right.

Only now have I started to look for a mail handler for hotmail too as I want to switch to Thunderbird or some other email client.

 

As I told you before, and, you can find confirmation at the freePOPs site, it can handle Hotmail. You mention Ypop, but do not say that you have tried freePOPs. I gave links, twice to freePOP.
It works, beautifully, with Myway, and, it works with Yahoo mail, but not as well as it did prior to Yahoo's changes on 7/25.

Thunderbird does not need any of these programs to access popular webmail sites as people have developed extensions for it & they get integrated into it only.

 

So, what is the question or solution, if extentions can be used? I have such extentions in the browser. I have Ymail notifier installed in Firefox.

Once installed, you don't need any other program for accessing webmail.

 

I think that we are getting lost. The original question was if Thunderbird could handle what Windows Live Mail does, i.e. comparing mail client vs. mail client.
And, then we bringing up Firefox which is not a mail client, but can handle webmail. So, is the point to forget what was asked in first place? I am, perfectly, happy to do that.

Firefox is a web browser & Thunderbird is a mail handler. I have been talking about Thunderbird all along. [Incidentally both are from Mozilla].

 

I will stop here. If you read the thread, you will see that I know exactly what I was talking about. And, after asking about Thunderbird and Hotmail, you bring up Firefox in message 12.
