    Hi PeteC,
Yes, I follow your way and use nLite (v1.4.8) to make an XP Install CD with SATA support. But, after Setting up Windows (with repair option), Windows XP keeps on rebooting. Everything when the progress bar running under the XP logo, the screen blanks, an "Isass.exe - Application error" window pops up a fraction of a second and reboot again. During reboot, it's actually in the Windows Setup screen telling me "Windows is setting up...."

I try the Recovery Console option as well. Same result. The situation now is worse than before.

    Hi, Noahdfear,

Before I attempt the recovery as above, I can enter IE from Tast Manager by following your way. I download the dss.exe,, but the current problem is even more severe. Do you still need that main.txt? I also try the combofix.exe but it comes up a few more application errors, each in its windows. They include cmd.exe, find.exe, conime.exe and consolidated eventually into a Window "Error - Win32 only" saying Incompatible OS - ComboFIX only works for Windows 2000 and XP" (but my computer is running Windows XP Professional SP2).

    Current status:
    - The PC repeatedly boots up till the progress bar is running and reboot.
    - userinit.exe is located in C:\Windows\System32 size 24576 date 7/27/07
    - an XP installation CD with SATA is prepared
An option remained is ... To installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing..., with this option, I shall have to re-install every software, right? Will this option, do I have to reinstall or reconfig all data files and software?

    What else can I do?

This thread is getting very confusing with two posters with similar problems popping in and out. I can see no simple way of splitting off your posts to another thread as some replies are directed to two posters. Should never have allowed it to go this far.

The CD you made incorporating the SATA drivers may have a problem - I would try making another.

Test your hard drive using the manufacturer's disk diagnostics if they will run on boot from a CD ....

Ivan, please download a fresh copy of ComboFix and try running it again, this time in safe mode if accessible.

    Thanks.

    I have work-arounded the matter!

    1. I tried a few drivers for the mother board, and eventually got one working.
    2. But it still kept on rebooting with nLite, so I'd reinstalled the Windows XP from fresh.
    3. It had taken some time to reinstall certain critical software and restore data, but it's business-as-usual.

It'll take additional days/weeks to restore the rest of the data. But I am free to turn to other stuff now. I'll stop here on this thread. Thank you for your help. See you around on other threads.

    Be careful about SP3!

When I re-installed Windows XP Profession (including SP2), I hit by a few reboot and eventually Windows prompted me a suggestion to install SP3 and claimed that SP3 would solve the problems. Okay, I had no better option and thus installed SP3.

The probelms then changed. First, the LAN and Wireless Lans drivers had to be downloaded and re-installed from another computer. Otherwise, there would be no network connection possible!

Second, my antivirus program had to be reinstalled manually. Norton 360 version 2.0 was not compatible. I needed to download again, and install again.

Third, the Adobe Master Collection CS3 had to download and install a Level 3 un-installation, and after uninstallation, I had to manually re-install everything. The setup program in the DVD didn't work. What Adobe technical support told me was that CS3 setup was not compatible with Windows XP Profession Service Pack 3. They asked me to un-install it! I couldn't because SP3 could not be uninstalled, and couldn't be restored from restore point either!
