    Anyone know how?
It can be done w/ IE, so I figure it can w/ Firefox.

In Firefox V2 you can save your bookmarks as an HTML file directly. With Firefox V3 you still can, but the default is a SQL/JSON file format. See this thread for more information about that and how to save in HTML format, too.

In FF 3.0.* you can save/backup bookmarks via:
Organize Bookmarks - (Library) - topmenu - Import and Backup drop down menu - Export HTML

You can put it anyplace you want to.

    HTH

Save the entire Firefox folder and you will always have your entire Profile data in safe keeping.

    Chas,

I agree with Ramona - save the whole thing.
If bookmarks are your only concern, backup "places.sqlite" ?

I am not familiar with MozBackup so I can not comment on how it works. Some swear by it, but I don't have any opinion.

Here is an overview of Profiles, including a link on how to back them up.

I tried your suggestion and it worked fine, though I'm not sure what the benefits are of one method over another.
    Is one method superior?

I just read this, and again I'm not sure which method is easiest and most reliable. I used the backup w/in FF that captjlddavis suggested (yesterday) and it seemed to work fine. It also has a restore function, so I expect that's a good method, but again I'm not sure why one method is better than the next.

    Chas,

The merits of one method over another are endless, depending on who you ask...

I wont go into my preference as I don't wish to start an endless post on the merits of one over another.

If all you are interested in is Bookmarks, then the method built in to FF 3.0.1 is as good as any. I have not totally figured out the *.json files ( when they are updated ) I did note if you use the "Organize Bookmarks" (Library) - select "Backup" and save to another location, it also updates to the *.json file in:
\bookmarkbackups\ replacing any that you have there for that day.
I personally am underwhelmed with the NEW FF handling bookmarks and "awesome" bar, but that is a whole other post......

I hope this is of some help. I am sure that others will also have opinions.

    regards:captjlddavis

    I have to agree.

What was wrong with saving bookmarks as HTML? Heck, even XML might have been acceptable. But JSON? What the heck is that? Portability. That is what I wanted. If I wanted some obscure (or unused by anyone else on the planet) way of doing things I would run IE, wouldn't I? JSON is akin to no longer being able to import/export CSV into/from a spreadsheet. What were they thinking?

Don't even get me started on the "awesome bar ". I did the tweak to turn it off (at least from a visible vantage point). Bletch!

OK then, I'll just take it at face value.
My software knowledge is fairly skimpy.
I can now make backups so I'm happy.
    Thx guys!

    Oops, now there's another option.
Oh Broni! Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water. :)
This sounds interesting also. I like that it can be scheduled.
Will have to take a look.

And while we're here, anyone know how to open a widget file?
Since I've ost all my data, and now on a new HD, I want to go w/ iTunes Alarm again, but the files are now in widget form. I did a search and couldn't find out how to open the silly thing. As was stated before, what the heck was wrong w/ the file extensions we've always used?
He says slightly tongue in cheek! ;)

Ramona, I used another computer (not my own) to download this file and the default was save to desktop. There was no option to redirect. Where do I change the default for the download location?

And thx for the info. In the past iTunes Alarm was self extracting. I don't understand why the widget file is now required (other than the file format of iTunes Alarm has been changed). Makes no sense to me.

Typically, a default location for downloads is My Documents (and probably some folder in it). If the user of the computer has selected Desktop as the default location, it is the way Windows is. One can select a different folder, if given a chance. If not, the Desktop is the least harmful location as it is in front of you. It is, especially, a good way to get downloads for people who don't own the computer. You can put the file anywhere you want, after you are done.
I do this all the time. I save files in specific folders as I am done.
I had never heard of this itunes alarm, but it is clear to me, on doing a simple search that the original itunes alarm from Apple, created for Macs, is not the same as this itunes alarm for windows. I don't know what you had before.

    Charles,

To save downloaded files to a specific folder:

    Tools | Options | Main

Scroll down to Downloads | Save file to: Select your folder of choice
