    TonyT,

Since you were employed by a web editor publisher, would you also be able to help with the "locate link browser" with which so many people are having problems when opening a link from an email and are using FF.

This problem does not happen with IE, but I have seen a knowledge base article on Microsoft web support pages addressing this problem in XP. But cannot find mention of it for Vista. I never had this problem, however, in XP.

Have googled and googled and have not found a decent answer. It was suggested somewhere to correct the registry, but that is not something with which I want to mess.

    Thanks for your input.

    Judy,

While you're waiting for TonyT, could you tell us what Mail client that you're using?

You must make Firefox the default browser, in order to have Firefox open when clicking on a link in a message. Check out these two KB articles:
    Default Browser
How to make Firefox the Default Browser

    Let us know your results.

FireFox is already my default browser , and Outlook 2003 is my email and I am using Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

    Thanks, Ramona.

    Judy,

Try this, if you haven't already:

Launch My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Choose menu 'Tools' -> 'Folder Options'
    Click the 'File Types' tab.
Scroll down to find 'URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol' and ensure it's highlighted.
    Click the 'Advanced' button.
In the 'Actions' box make sure that 'open' is highlighted (click on it if necessary)
    Click the 'Edit' button.
Uncheck 'Use DDE', click the Browse button and browse to Firefox.exe on your system, and click OK. If you get a "file not found" message, browse to Firefox.exe and click OK.
The path to Firefox.exe should now appear in the 'Application used to perform this action' box.
Go to that 'Application used to perform this action' box, and add '-url "%1 "' at the end, without the single quotes, so that it reads e.g.
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -url "%1 "
    with the double quotes!
    Click OK again.
Repeat the process with the file type 'URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy'
    ---

I'm sure you've done the following to set Outlook 2003 as your default Mail client:

Start | Default Programs | Set Program Access and Computer Defaults
and set Outlook 2003 as your default e-mail application.

The problem with Vista is that the folder options do not give you a "file tab" and I can't figure out the instructions on how to get there. You are quite correct in that could be the answer re: the instructions you gave me --- but I need to figure out how to get to the "file tab" in Vista.

Thanks for reminding me about that since all I remember seeing on many different forums was to re-do the registry.

So, if you know how to get to the Vista file tab that would be great.

My default settings look OK - but thanks for telling me to look there since that is a new thing in Vista, too

    Judy,

After a Google search, I found that the Folder Options window in Windows Vista is missing the File Types tab found in earlier versions of Windows. So here is how to edit file type associations in Windows Vista

Now you are the genius !!

I had seen those instructions before, but didn't understand how to do the default program method.

But, combining your good detailed instructions for XP, I finally figured it out, and Voila ! it worked. Can't believe it, what a pest that problem was !

    Thanks so much.

Now I have only one FireFox / Vista problem left ( hopefully ), but will post a new thread.
