Dont have to read this stuff here below but it may help
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright well the real begining of my problem is im trying to trouble shoot why I cant join or be seen on games of Age of Empires on my LAN with my brothers computers.

So turns out they cant ping me.

Checked windows firewall and its not even running.

I remember doing away with it a while back when trying to trouble shoot pretty much the same problem only it was with hosting games online and my router not allowing people to see my games. I dont know what steps I did to take off windows fire wall but i do remember doing it. I think mostly it was turning it off in services and the hardware profile option.

So I figured I try to turn on windows firewall and I get error message, everything ive tried to turn back on wont work and give me a whole different story/post of error messages.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ***(specific problem starts here)***
So I was going to try to reinstall windows fire wall in add/remove windows components

Tried to open it and it said another copy was already running (idk why) So I found it in task manager and ended it then I got a new error

It says "Setup was unable to open information from file: fxscom.inf" "Contact your...... error code 0x2 at line 2088999411 "

I found a link to here of a person with the same issue but different code.

When I followed the steps outlined I didnt know how to get the cmd line to work so I figured all it was doing was locating that specific file and putting in that specific location. I found the files to already be there.

    Any ideas?

    Hi businessjeff.

Can you use internet on the machine ? Can you browse, email etc.? Can you ping other computers ? What antivirus are you using ?

Is the name of the file correct? I think it should be FxsOcm.inf, which is the inf that drives the fax setup during the GUI portion of Windows Setup.

You could try the same solution I posted in the other thread, overwriting the existing file - it might be corrupt, have you tried to open it?

The File that the error message mentions is fxsocm.inf I did just copy and paste it replacing the one on my machine, is that the same as doing the cmd line u gave to do it?

didnt see that was just a typo. it is fxsocm.inf

Extracted the file in cmd from both my comp and the cd either way doesnt work. Gives same error code.

I am not sure why you are trying to uninstall and now reinstall Windows Firewall. It should be just a matter of going to Control Panel -> Windows Firewall and setting it to Off. When it is off it will not interfere with network traffic, so I suggest your networking problem lies elsewhere.

If your machine is running Windows XP Professional and the others are running XP Home, they will be running on different Workgroups. The default workgroup for Professional is WORKGROUP, the default for Home is MSHOME. You should also check that they are using the same Subnet Mask. You don't say if it is a Laptop or Desktop machine. If it is a business machine, is it joined to a domain?

If Windows Firewall is disabled (Off) and cannot be re-enabled, could it be possible that another Firewall is installed? If an secondary Firewall is installed it should automatically disable Windows Firewall.

You should not need to uninstall and reinstall Windows Firewall, it sounds like it is currently installed and that's why you cannot REinstall it.

Check there is no third-party firewall installed.

Try going to the troubleshooting section here to find out what the problem is with the network:

When I try to open windows firewall it gives error messages. All trouble shooting ive found consists of making sure MMI, RSA, and the ICS services are running, which they arent and when I try to turn them on I get error messages. Which is why I was just going to try and reinstall windows firewall.

We are now on the same workgroup and same subnet with same results, they cant ping me. Desktop machine and it has nothing entered for a domain.

Never installed any other firewalls, nor can I seem to find any running. Used this program a little to try and find running firewalls, it gave an error and thats about all I tried from that. Ive also read that a common windows program (cant remember name) has its own firewall which disable windows firewall I thought that may be why. As far as I know I have no running firewalls, however I cannot be pinned.

Seems to me its not working right seeing how it wont re-start up.

Install a anti virus & scan your computer. Also install Adaware 2008 and Spybot. Scan & you could have viruses/spywares which could be root of you problem.

Yea, I'd suggest: read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

All good advice! You need both the Firewall and a Virus scanner.

But do the below first to get windows strightened out!

    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file.

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do the below

    Reinstall BITS
    Reinstall Windows Firewall
    Repair Permissions
    Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Reboot retest!

    Get back to us.
