On XP Home running free avast 4.8 there seems to be a conflict. When avast starts it sees symantec/Norton running (which it's NOT) and says some features won't start (1st attachmnt below), and hovering over the taskbsr icon shows the secong pic. However when the icon is dbl-clicked four processes are shown running.

    1. am I adaquately protected?

    2. I've removed all readable norton and symantec irems from the registry, but a search on these terms reveals multiple non-readable alphanumeric items.
Should I remove them as well?

    Hi Sparrow

No 3 shieds are not loaded.

To finish cleaning Norton do the following.

    1. D/L Regseeker and install but not run: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html

    2. Download but not run norton removal utility: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

    3. boot to safe mode

    4. do a windows file search with advanced options to search hidden system and sub folders. Search for norton*.* and remove all found!

    5. same for syman*.*

    6. run the norton removal tool

    7. run regseeker select find in registry for
    norton
    then
    symantec

    Remove all found!

    Reboot to normal! Craap Gone!

Thanks Mike. I still use Ghost, so have some symantec stuff on the HDD. I've done everything else but remove the alphanumerics, so will do that. Am unaware whether any harm can result, but here goes.

If Symantec / Avast continue to bump heads, try uninstalling Ghost. Then run annihilation level cleaning for Symantec / Norton. Once Avast agrees it's all gone, reinstall Ghost.

Thanks again, guys. No more error messages from avast. Some interesting findings in Regseeker: 4 symantec entries persist after several deletions and reboots all done in safe mode (1st attchmnt) and a variable number of multiple norton entries, 5 - 7, also. These no longer appear to cause a problem However there's still one process not running (2nd att.). Dbl-click icon still shows all of only 4 (!) listed running as before.

I guess if it's working it's time to quit fixing it? Any more ideas appreciated, however.

PS: all semantec progs were removed from HDD and not reinstalled.

    Hi Sparrow

These are mostly harmless but are not removable since they are devices!

To remove them D/L PservCpl http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pservcpl.html

Run it change view to devices find and delete all items related to norton or symantec.

You will need to read all the way across. Any line that has norton or symantec try to delete first, but you may need to stop and disable first then delete.

Reboot run reg search again and delete.

Thanks again, Mike. More investigation revealed that the 'provider' not running is for outlook, and that's not being used; all the others are fine.
I'll be thinking about your last suggestion and may try it for the experience.
