The problem I have is that when I try to click on a link in various programs (such as Pure Network Magic) an error message pops up saying: This file does not have a program asspciated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folders Options control panel.
This happens with other programs as well. An instance of a link would be: http://www1.networkmagic.com/support/faq/180.html

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Jessjames - Welcome to the Board :)

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types and scroll down to HTML and click on it ....

Should say Opens with IE - is this the case?

If some other program is noted click on Change and select IE and check the box 'Always use this program ....'

If HTML is absent click on New , type HTML in the dialogue box and follow the dialogues through.

Alternatively go here and download the reg file to fix HTML association.

That webpage does not seem particularly special.

Are you using Internet Explorer as your browser? If so, try repairing it:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

I keep a second browser installed in case there seems to be a problem with my primary one. Some are Opera, Netscape and Firefox. Opera is a small program, so is good to keep for testing. Another small program, I think, is Crazy Browser.

The other area you may need to look at is updating Java.

That all checked ok. It does open with IE.

"The other area you may need to look at is updating Java. "

I checked that and I have Java 6 version 5 installed.

I haven't done a reset on Explorer as yet.

Do I still need to download and use Reg File to fix the HTML associations?

Also I installed a new HP Officejet all-in-one. I have internet access all the time on my computer. I just tried to use a link with a program called HP Solution Center that would not work either. The link was: http://www.hp.com?refer=HPSolutionCenter

I am using IE right now and I just clicked on the link in my previous message and it takes me to the site.
If I close down IE and just start the HP program and click on the link, it just gives me the message: This file does not have a program asspciated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folders Options control panel.

When you try to open those external links, is IE already open? If not, try to open it first.
    What IE version?
Did you try to make Firefox your default browser?

In that case I suggest you uninstall IE 7 and roll back to IE6 and see if the problem remains. If it is solved reinstall 7 and test.

Note - if you have installed SP3 you will be unable to uninstall IE7, unless .....

Uninstall SP3, then uninstall IE7. If you want to keep IE7 (recommended) reinstall SP3 and then install IE7 - the uninstall facility for IE7 will then be restored.

    Well PeteC

I uninstalled SP3 pack and I tried the problem link again and still it would not work. I then uninstalled IE 7. I went back to the same link and when I clicked on it, it took me to the web page like it should.
I will not change back until further instructions from you on what to do first. So right now I just have SP2 and IE 6.0.2900.2180. What next?

Looks like it is an IE 7 problem - maybe corruption in the original install.

I would now reinstall SP3 and test again - with IE 6 (IE7 is not included in SP3). If the problem does not reappear install IE7 and test.

Close to midnight here - will check back in the morning.
