    Hi everyone,

New to this forum and have a burning question (well, two actually - they might be related).

Indexing on my Sony Vaio vista laptop does not work. Whenever I do a search a pop-up appears that says 'your searches may be slow because the index is not running'. When I go to 'indexing options' in the control panel all the options are greyed out so there is no way to turn it on...Any suggestions? I installed Truecrypt and use that to mount my data drive (I have left my C drive as it was). I cannot remember if the indexing worked before I installed Truecrypt (I installed it pretty soon after getting the laptop).

Also, since a while deleting or renaming files and folders takes forever - up to a minute per file. Any ideas?

I did a disk defragmentation yesterday (which took about 12 hours!) and have used ccleaner to do a general clean up but to no avail.

    Thanks for your suggestions... :)

Is Indexing Service running, and set to automatic start?

It's a known issue with Vista. SP1 fixes it.
    Alternatively, use TeraCopy: http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php

If you want to use it (I don't), you have to set it to automatic startup, and restart computer.

The three options in the 'indexing options' dialog box are greyed out. These are 'modify', 'advanced', and 'pause'. How do I set it to automatic startup?

Right click on Indexing Service, click Properties, and under Startup type, select Automatic from drop-down menu.
    Restart computer.

Where do I find 'indexing service'? Is it different from 'indexing options' in the control panel? I searched for it but could not find it.

If it is the same, all options in 'indexing options' are greyed out and there is nowhere to right-click to bring up the properties...

    Thanks for your ongoing help!

Click Start then click run and type services.msc and press enter. Alternatively if you can't find run on the start menu then press the Windows logo key and the letter r to bring up the run box then type services.msc. The Services window should now open. Scroll down to the indexing service and make sure it is set to automatically start.

'indexing service' does not appear in that list. (it's also not under 'windows indexing service' or something like that)...

I've installed SP1 but unfortunately this has not made a difference - deleting or renaming a file still takes at least 30 seconds, no matter its size!

Any idea what might be causing this? Any possibility it's connected to the other issue of the indexing not working?

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone :)

(I installed Teracopy and although that's quicker, it's not really a solution - for example when you're using Winamp (or any other programme) and want to delete several files through the 'open file' dialog box, that doesn't work. It's also a hassle to have to go through Teracopy as it opens another window on your screen)

I apologize, my bad. In Vista, "Indexing service" is called Windows Search

Windows Search service depends on couple more services:
    - Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    - DCOM Server Process Launcher
Check, if both processes are running, and set to start automatically.

Both of these are showing as 'started' (and set to start automatically). (Incidentally, all the options are greyed out so if they had not already been started I would not have been able to).

Thanks for your help anyway :)

I'm actually not too fussed about the indexing (I use Google Desktop Search anyway), but I am worried about file deletion/renaming taking so long.

Should the above steps have fixed this or is this a different issue - any tips in that case?

    I really appreciate your help!

No. Those steps are meant for fixing indexing issue.
You don't have Vista DVD by any chance?
