    Hi All

I have a problem that affects one site .This problem has only arisen since I upgraded from Norton 2007 to 2008.
My operating system is XP with media center.Internet explorer became a pain in the neck long ago (hanging up on me) so I have used the mozilla firefox browser for about a couple of years without problems...until now!!

Tonight I upgraded from Norton 2007 to 2008.Now if I try to access a site called www.ancestry.co.uk firefox throws up an error - firefox has encountered a problem and must shut down. Losing this ancestry site is like losing my right arm .

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Close Firefox.
Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox>Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode), and see, if same thing will happen.

I don't have any problem with the site, but I don't use Norton. As it the only site which is acting up?

    Welcome to the Forum, Coalminer!

    Coalminer,

It could mean that one of your extensions/add-ons is causing the problem. After starting in Safe Mode, add your extensions one by one, to see which one might be the culprit.

In Tools|Add-ons, most add-ons can be disabled. I would disable all of them, and then reenable one at a time. This way you will not have to start from scratch. If you have a problem after reenabling an add-on, you should uninstall it. Still, I don't know why problems started with the upgrade to Norton 2008.

I disabled all 3 add ons ,but no joy, still the same when I try to open www.ancestry.co.uk..........firefox encountered a problem and must close !

Keep those three disabled, and switch to default theme (skin). Restart Firefox, and try again.

Beside checking if the Theme may be causing problems, ever tried to look at
    contact page?
. Of course, if access is denied with any ancestry.co.uk page, it is beyond Firefox. I experience no problem. But, it would be pointless to use the service, as I live in the USA.

Thanks to you all for being patient, I ain't too hot with computers.I tried disabling all 3 add on's and I only have 1 theme installed, which is the default firefox(default)2.0, but firefox still faults when ancestry's homepage has finished loading.
I am how ever able to gain access to ancestry with firefox in safe mode,so I hope to contact ancestry to try and get a fix.It all seems strange though that the problem only started with the Norton upgrade 2007 to 2008.Norton were no help. They just said delete your cookies and temp files.I did this which did not help.I subscribe to ancestry at $160.00 per year ,so I really do need to get this issue sorted.

In my opinion, everything points to Norton 2008. I know what a pain it is with so Anti-Virus programs. Ideally, you should try to disable Norton, first, just temporarily. There must be a way. Is it Norton, the antivirus program, or Norton the Security Suite? Often, one component may be the troublemaker.
I am using the Sygate Personal Firewall, which is owned by Norton. It is free, and it has given me no problem.
The Ancestry site may not be of much help, but tell them everything. Norton, also, has an user forum, as far as I know.

    Hi Coalminer,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

Since you performed an upgrade from a previous version of Norton, there is the possibility that your installation may have become corrupt. To ensure that your Norton 2008 product is installed properly, please follow the steps below to properly remove and then reinstall Norton.

    1. Click on the link below, and carefully follow the instructions to use the Norton Removal tool:

    Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

    2. After the tool has run and removed all Norton products, restart your computer. Log into Windows and run the tool again. Restart your computer after it finishes running a second time.

    3. Make sure that your internet connection is working properly and then reinstall your Norton product. Towards the end of the installation, LiveUpdate will run and download any available program and definition updates.

When the installation is complete, please run a "Comprehensive Scan" on your computer to make sure that you are not infected. After you run the scan, please clear all temporary data from Firefox and then try accessing the site again. Instead of using a Bookmark, manually type in the following address: http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

Let me know if the reinstall has resolved your issue. Also, please let me know which Norton product you are using.

    Thank you,
    Mike

i emailed ancestry to tell them about the problem I was having connecting to their site. Today I received this email from them.

    We appreciate your message.

Do you have Norton installed on your computer? We have found a problem with the latest version of Norton on our website. It installs an add-on for Internet Explorer that causes our site to freeze up and behave abnormally. This add-on is named "Norton Confidential." You can disable it in Internet Explorer by clicking on the Tools menu and selecting Manage Add-ons, then Enable or Disable Add-ons. Select Norton Confidential and click Disable at the bottom to turn it off. You will need to close and re-open Internet Explorer for the changes to take affect.

Unfortunately if you have Firefox we have not yet been able to troubleshoot how to remove this add-on for your browser. You may need to contact Norton for help with this.

Norton Confidential is, among other things, an Anti-phishing filter. The problems occur when this interferes with other phishing filters and security programs on your computer. We do not recommend that you leave this permanently disabled, and you may want to contact Norton to find out how to use this software without having it interfere with other operations on your computer.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

Due to problems in the last 3 times that I have upgraded the Norton IS,I have decided now to drop Norton as Tobby advises.

I am going to try McAfee. Hope its better than Norton !

Unfortunately, my opinion about McAfee is same as about Norton = piece of ****.
BTW...my friend emailed me today. After latest Norton update, he's not able to see any images on web pages.

I am downloading v.8.0.1 of AVG. I have been using v.7.5 with no problem, and I knew that v.8 was comprising a suite. I was a McAfee user for several years, and it worked ok. But, side by side it was no comparison with AVG. AVG had daily updates when McAfee had weekly updates. Also, McAfee could not handle mail. I will let you know how I did with AVG8.0.1.

Don't worry, while it was downloading, I read the reviews at download.com, and they were uniformly negative. It seems to a free, yes, but just trial (30 days) version. If it is not, it surely is not clear.

    Coalminer,
if you use Firefox, it should be easy to, at least, disable the add-on, by going to Tools|Add-on|select Norton Confidential, if present, and hit disable.
I have found only one add-on which could neither be disabled nor uninstalled. That was Roboform, which was not compatible. I could not find it anywhere.
