This has happened to both my Vista Home Premium laptops immediately after installing SP1. I can go into the defrag schedule, set it and then exit but when I open the defrag tool again the schedule has returned to 'never'. Is there any way around this or is it a SP1 bug as it seems to be?

I doubt if it is a bug - it works for me. It's set, and I can alter it.
Is there a valid volume set?
What happens when you try a manual defrag?

Hi, manual defrag works fine. This all seems to have happened after installing SP1 - it worked fine before.

Sunking101, Perosnally I would ditch the Windows defrag utility and download Auslogics Disk Defrag. I have never liked the windows defrag utility because it doesn't do a good enough job. Auslogics disk defrag is much more efficient with defragging a harddrive, it has additional options that allow you to customize it, it shows what file it is actually defragmenting, and best of all its free. Its located here. http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download :)

    1. Check if Task Scheduler is running
      • At a command prompt type sc queryex schedule
      • Look at the STATE: line, it should read 4 RUNNING if it's not, start it with the following command: sc start schedule
    2. Check if task is ok
      • At a command prompt type : schtasks /query | findstr /i "defrag "
      • Look for
        ManualDefrag N/A Ready
        ScheduledDefrag {a future date} Ready

Let me know what you find.

    Hi Arie,

The first command prompt shows 4 Running as you say it should do.
The second one says manual defrag ready, scheduled defrag disabled.

    Thanks

Check Task Scheduler (under System Tools), Microsoft > Windows > Defrag.

See if you can right-click the task an select Enable.

I've opened the task scheduler but don't understand it. I can't see any list that will give me Microsoft > Windows > Defrag

Ah, thankyou very much Arie. The defrag was disabled in the task scheduler. I have now enabled it as you directed and it is now working correctly! :D
