I have a problem with my display settings, when I boot up my settings keep reverting back to 800 x 600 with the lowest colour quality.
I change the settings back to 1280 X 1024 with highest quality (32 bit) colour and apply and save my settings but on reboot they have reverted back to 800 x 600???

Check Device Manager for any problems with your graphics driver.

    Hi John,

I haven't seen any problems like that that been due to graphics adapter drivers.

    You have reinstalled.

Look in Add or Remove Programs, there should be an uninstaller there.

Still no luck, run the uninstaller in Safe Mode.

John, Run MsConfig and trim your startups down to see if one of them may be causing the problem.

You may have a bad video card or MOBO if integrated. :( If it's integrated and bad, you could of course disable it and install a card.

You have tried a reinstall, did you uninstall first? Try uninstalling before you reinstall as I was suggesting.

    Hi John

Sometimes this can happen with any Video card if it can't properly detect the Monitor.

Go to the www site for you Monitor and find your model nunber and if they have a driver (may be just and inf file) then download and install it.

Sorry to say some Monitor mfgs don't offer these or they are very hard to find. Some Monitors are also so generic they don't need one and use the default Microsoft inf. And in some cases this is the problem itself as the M$ inf file is missing or damaged.

Whoops, I left out a word or two
It should read "I haven't seen any problems like that that have not been due to graphics adapter drivers ". It is probably wrong grammatically anyway :)

What I meant was, problems like not being able to set resolution I have always found to be graphics adapter driver/software problems. My suggestion is to uninstall any drivers and software in Add or Remove Programs and it would be a good idea to carry out the uninstall in Safe Mode.

Possible corrupted profile. Try creating a new profile and give it admin privileges. Set the resolution to what you want then see if it reverts back to 800 X 600 after a reboot.

Hi Guys, now this does not sound very logical but by simply changing the desktop picture back to the basic clouds it seems to have cured the problem, Is is logical?

It might be a problem with Active Desktop.

To avoid running Active Desktop, try converting the picture to a .bmp file as described here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925235

Also, you may need to edit it so that it has the same (similar) dimensions as your desktop. It sounds like the picture is hard for Windows to display as a wallpaper.

It only lasted one reboot and then reverted back, the only saving grace is that with the DesktopSave program I can put it back to normal with one click, but the problem remains!
