Fist I had system crashing. Found that problem with a memtest disk it seems that 1 of the 512MB ram sticks looks like it was repaired. Now that I relpaced both with 1GB each. And it was a bad stick it had 125 errors on it. Now the system is running slower. I had Gateway run there scan on it and they told me I have motherboard K2BC51G/PV . And Crucial also can up with that mobo.
But the mobo I have is K2BC51 LF. So would the bad ram have done damage to the mobo? and would this be making the system run slower?
If yes to both above what should I look for in motherboards for this system.

I would also like to thank PetC for all the help he gave me before the system went down.
    Thanks:confused:

    Hi, jabfarm. :)
I'm confused about what that means. (I do understand Crucial is a brand of RAM and "mobo" means motherboard. ;))

How do you know it is K2BC51 LF? Have you looked at the printing on the motherboard?

Have you installed the drivers that came with the computer? Go to the Gateway website -> Support and find how to identify your model. Does K2BC51 LF relate to the model they specify?

Sort out the identifications (K2BC51G/PV or K2BC51 LF). Search at the Gateway website for specifications for your model. The difference is G/PV or LF, find out what they mean and double check which one is your model.

Gateway is an OEM manufacturer. Accurate hardware identification by third party (non-Gateway) software may be , mmmm, difficult.

Sorry I should of wrote it like this , Crucial also ran there scan and came up with the same motherboard model number.
Crucial was uncertain why there scan came up with a different model number.
But they did point out that gateway made two computers with this same model number GT5235E and GT5235E Media center Edition the one I have.

    Mattman
First question. The modem number is written on the motherboard.
Second Computer was manufactured by gateway. Has all there lables on it even there id codes. But someone had it took it back to them and they repaired it and another company sold it to me.
I will go back to Gateway to see if I can find out anymore info.
    Thanks

    To identify:

If all the following 3 programs agree with either Crucial or Gatway I would go with them.

If they also have mixed opinions, then its still up in the air...

    CPU-Z
    http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_144.zip

    SIW
    http://www.gtopala.net/download.php?file=8

    SIV
    http://siv.mysite.orange.co.uk/downloads/siv.zip

As for the slowdown lets take a look at you system in depth. Not assuming you have malware but lets use a couple of malware tools to see what is running on your system.

    Go here: http://windowsbbs.com/announcement.php?f=41

get HiJackThis, Deckards system scanner and ATF_Cleaner

Run Deckard and post all logs.

Be very careful about update downloads. If the motherboard was changed to a different model, BIOS upgrades for the "system identification" could well be the wrong ones.

:) Thanks for the links to the tests . They all show that the mobo is K2BC51G/PV. I just don't understand why they have K2BC51 LF written on the mobo.
Hijacks File is all greek to me once I read how to post it I will . Wont be until 4/6 Need to go to work now.

The motherboard is made by FIC, apparently their standard retail motherboard is the K2BC51 LF. I take it that G/PV means the version sold to Gateway. It will use a Gateway OEM BIOS version.

I don't think you need worry that the model number on the motherboard is different.

You should not need to use it, but see Identify Motherboard 1 & 2:

3 things for you to try

Make sure the ram you bought and the old one have the same speed and timings. You should be able to check on the package or on a sticker on the ram itself. Speed is labeled in MHz, and the timings is a set of 4 numbers that should be something like 4-4-4-12 (higher=slower). I checked gateway's site, they say its DDR2 533mhz but don't list the timings.

Second, make sure you install the chips in alternating slots. So install the first ram chip in the first slot (closest to the processor) and then install the second chip in the third slot, skipping the second. This makes sure you run in a dual channel setup where the sticks get used in parallel, almost twice as fast as otherwise.

Third, check your virtual memory. Sometimes windows is really dumb when it comes to virtual memory sizes, and it might not have increased the size along with your physical ram. So to do it yourself, right click on My Computer and go to Properties -> Advanced. Then click on the Settings button under performance and go to the Advanced Tab, then click on Change under Virtual Memory. Most people say you should have around 1.5 times your physical memory, but I usually go for twice. Either way, make sure that the system is set with at least 3072MB as a minimum, 4096MB if you want to be safe. And a fixed size is also better because it prevents your page file from getting fragmented.

    1. Nothing on new or old ram sticks. With the SIV program I did find memory 533MHz (9) Read Preamble 2.0ns.
But I could not find timing anywhere.
    2. Installed in altenating slots. This did help make the system run more quiet.
Now when I first got this pc they had the ram in 1 an 2 .
3.The virlual memory is set at 3812mb.

OK a lot of heavy Apps here for a slower processor even with more ram.

I would still like to see a Deckards System (DSS) scan, so go back to the same link as before and get Deckard run and post all of its logs.

    Questions:

    1. Is AOL your ISP?
    2. Dialup or Broadband?
    3. How much RAM installed now?
    4. Processor name and speed?
Get this info from the downloads I gave CPU-Z etc

Do the below after a fresh reboot open nothing else.

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del then click Performance an watch 30-45 seconds and report back the scope. Tell us like this: from 98% down to 7% finally settling down to 20%

    Then Click Processes

Tell us what the System Idle process seems to settle at! The higher this number the better (faster) your computer.

Then note if 1 or more processes seem to stay high, the higher these numbers the worse for your computer especially if you are doing nothing.

I think you may find Panda consuming a high amount.

    Let us know.

    Mike
