I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2008 (no wisecracks please lol). I did a lot of reading about current ratings and it came out on top from PC World and PC magazine for 2008 internet security suites.

Now to my problem. Windows Security Center does not recognize any part of my new Norton IS 2008, either the antivirus or firewall components.

I do have windows default firewall turned off, and I do have the show Windows Security Center option turned on in Norton IS 2008.

Any suggestions as to how I can get Windows Security Center to recognize my Norton IS 2008?

    Thanks, Tarheelfan001

    Hi Mailman,

Thanks for your response and the link. I read that post, it appears the same situation with Norton IS 2007 as well. I did check and uncheck the options mentioned therein, to no avail.

One would think that between the largest software company in the world and the largest security software company, they would have worked such an important glitch out. From what I have been able to read, this is not NEW news. Thanks again mailman.

    Hello Tarheelfan,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team replying to your post. The first thing you will want to make sure of is that you do not have any other 3rd party antivirus or internet security applications installed, as they can cause conflicts with Norton Internet Security.

The other possibility is that your installation of Norton Internet Security has become corrupt. The easiest way to fix this problem, is to properly uninstall and reinstall Norton Internet Security 2008. Please follow the steps below.

    1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

    Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

    2. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Then log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.

    3. Make sure that your internet connection is working properly, and then reinstall Norton Internet Security 2008. Towards the end of the installation process, the LiveUpdate feature will automatically run and download and install updates to both the program files and definition files. As long as your computer is logged in to Windows and connected to the internet, LiveUpdate will check for and install updates for Norton Internet Security, multiple times per day.

Next, check the Windows Firewall setting and make sure it is turned "Off."

Now, run a Full System Scan with Norton to make sure your computer is not infected.

Let me know if this process fixes the problem.

    Thank you,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for your suggestions. I apologize for taking so long to get back to you, but I have been busy.

I tried what you suggested to no avail. The Nrt tool did not work, and actually caused my computer to start a loop at reboot. What I mean is after using the uninstall tool as you suggested, then trying to reinstall NIS 2008, the install stopped when the progress bar got to the end (the last thing that appeared to install was Norton antivirus). I waited for about one hour and it was still sitting there. The only way I could do anything was a reboot using the power button. It would not stop using task manager.

So when I rebooted, my computer would reboot, but then the hard drive was still spinning and my computer frozen. After waiting about 1/2 hour, and with my hard drive spinning and spinning, I was concerned about it overheating, so I would turn it off again with the power button. I did this 3 or 4 times. I could not get past this "looping" as I call it.

I finally booted into safe mode, and used the Nrt again. It uninstalled and I was able to reboot normally again. I did not try to install again, but rather called Norton support to see if they could get a clean install.

I must tell you the guys in India were extremely professional, caring, and tried very hard to solve this problem.

In all (because of rebooting and losing connections) , I had to work with 3 or 4 differents agents. They all asked to take remote control of my computer, which I gladly obliged as I wanted to fix this problem, and I also wanted to learn how to troubleshoot this problem.

They also called me on the telephone in conjunction with the remote control access.

They all tried the same troubleshooting steps to no avail. Here is what they did.

    1. They redownloaded the Nrt and the executable from the Norton site to my desktop. They wanted to make sure my retail disk and my downloads of the same were not corrupted somehow.

    2. They ran the Nrt twice with rebooting following. They cleaned the common folder, the prefetch folder, the registry, the temp folder, and checked the programs folder to make sure no left files from the previous install were present. After the 1st agent did this, I knew what each agent thereafter was going to do. And actually, being a long time Norton customer, I sorta knew and thought those had always been standard steps for a Norton or Symantec reinstalls. The only difference in this particular process was the Nrt tool.

    3. When trying to reinstall they all got the same result, the installer stopped when the progress bar got to the end. However, two of them got my computer to reboot, where I had not been able to without the looping. After those reboots, one Norton icon appeared in the notification area of the taskbar. When they clicked on it, NIS 2008 would not start, but rather a quick opening of a window with immediate disappearance of that window. Once a blank window stayed open with I think "Help" at the top of that Norton window.

    4. NIS 2008 had not actually installed and was never functional. None of the agents could get it to open or function.

    5. One agent suggested that NIS 2008 does not work with a dual booting computer. I found that odd, but took his suggestion into consideration. The last thing I wanted to do was redo my hard drive.

    6. None of the agents were ever able to get NIS 2008 installed using their troubleshooting methods.

    7. Again they were all nice and very professional. They represented Norton well.

    8. With me doing all that I could, by following your suggestions, and then letting 3 or 4 agents do all they could with no success, I took the agent's suggestion and did away with my dual boot. Here is what I did.

    9. I deleted both partitions, and did a reformat and reinstalled my xp. I did all updates and and installed sp2.

    10. I then installed NIS 2008. It installed without a hitch.

    11. I HAD to know if my dual boot was the actual problem (as one of the Norton agents had suggested). So I created another partition, and reinstalled my Vista, did all its updates, including sp1.

    12. I then reinstalled NIS 2008 on my Vista. It installed without a hitch.

    13. I now have NIS 2008 working on both my xp and Vista installs(partitions), so what the agent suggested was the problem was NOT the problem.

    14. Also, what started all of this (NIS 2008 not being recognized or showing in windows security center), NIS 2008 now shows in windows security center! (in both xp and Vista)

    15. I cannot believe I had to go through all of that just to reinstall my NIS 2008, but since what you suggested didn't work, and what 3 or 4 Norton agents tried did not work, I felt I had no choice. I felt my only other choice was not being able to use my new NIS 2008. I did not want to lose it or the money I spent on it. I do not think Norton wants it to be this way for other customers with the same issue.

    16. Mike I hope this helps Norton and you with troubleshooting this problem for other Norton customers. If you have any other questions of me feel free to ask.

    Thank You,
    Tarheelfan001

    Hi Tarheelfan,

I appreciate you responding back and letting me know your experience. I am sorry that you had to spend so much time to get Norton Internet Security 2008 installed and working properly. I will be passing along your experience to our engineering and technical support teams so that they can make improvements.

    Thank you again,

    Mike
