Recently, Asus, Toshiba and some other brands are offering Vista-to-XP Downgrade Program for free to specific models, by means of Windows XP Recovery CD.

Does any insider know when Microsoft will offer Vista-to-XP Downgrade Program to all Vista users? Is Microsoft going to fade out all Vista?

I am very eager to know, because my notebook has run out of upgrade options on RAM (2GB max). To downgrade to XP, I can run my applications pretty good with 2GB.

Have you tried using "best performance" settings? Look in Control Panel -> Performance information and Tools -> Advanced Tools.

Turn off the Sidebar. Use simple settings for visual effects. Look in Task Scheduler. Check indexing and minimise it. Try a ReadyBoost drive.

You should be able to make Vista "look and feel" like XP, that should make it work similarly as well . It may still utilise more resources. 2GB of RAM is still quite large. What program/s slow it down? Of course, if you run several "large" programs at once, or many small programs, it will chew up RAM.

If you want use the "bells and whistles" of Vista, it will chew up resources.

    Not likely

Sure, probably around 2014, when the next OS hits SP1 :D

Vista runs very good at 2GB RAM.

    Thanks Matt.

I've tried everything you mentioned. The problem is that my applications should run on desktop instead of notebook; I know it.

Arie, thanks for that. Just Vista alone is fine. Adding firewall, anti-virus, email scanning, anti-spam, Wacom and other bluetooth appls, then widgets and full set of Adobe Master Collection + data, printer control monitors, email, skype, animation design tools, presentation, video, itunes, e-books, dictionaries, digital maps and 2 dozens of other applications that I use on the road... 2GB is ... well.. besides, I don't have much time to further tune up the notebook.

Anyway, Vista-to-XP has a market demand.

OEM pc makers are the ones responsible for making the drivers etc for their machines...This of course would make the computers cost more...

I see a LOT of stuff that probably loads at startup, no matter if you use it. That's the first thing I do, get rid of all that junk that loads when you don't need it.

    Back to normal speed now.

I found the reason. A one-Gig RAM has burnt out. After replacement, I have 2 Gig on my notebook and the memory usage is about 50% upon boot-up.

Besides, Vista-to-XP downgrade program is available to pre-loaded Vista Ultimate and downgrade to XP Professional. So, my notebook is Vista Home Premium, thus not eligible for downgrade.

And, just happened to my knowledge, Microsoft has aggressively planned to cut Windows Vista price by 50%. When I see it in the retail market, I may consider upgrade mine to Vista Ultimate.
