I was running xp prof sp2 with 1 gb of pc3200 memory on an asus k8v mobo, with a 2ghz processor, and was consistently getting lags, my windows would take forever to open up and when typing the letters would appear a few seconds after typing them, stuff like that, I removed the memory I had because it was paired when i purchased it and I bought 3 1gb sticks of pny pc3200, I still have the same issues but now it is worse, I have run spyware(spysweeper, adaware, and spybot, and I have kaspersky av installed, does anyone have any idea what could be causing this. thank you in advance

    Several things to check .....

Plenty of free space on the hard drive? >20-25% preferred.

    Checked pagefile settings?

Checked hard drive DMA settings if using PATA drive(s)?

    Cleaned out temp files ...

Start > Run > %temp% > Enter - all files safe to delete?

    Cleaned out C:\Windows\Temp?

Cleaned out IE TIFs and set disk space for TIF's to 50 Mb?

    Defragged hard drive(s)?

    Disabled unnecessary startup items?

Checked in Task Manager for tasks hogging memory or CPU?

Run an online virus scanner (Quicklinks in my signature) - not Kapersky as you already have that?

If the results of the above do not yield fruit read this and post the logs.

When was the last time you installed your operating system fresh? Pete's suggestions are all great but there could be countless things that could be causing the problem. If you haven't done a fresh install in a couple of years, it's possible that your OS is pretty "trashed ".

Chances are, as in most cases, your problem is software-related and there's a very good chance that a full reinstall of your OS would solve your problem. When I say a full reinstall, I mean wipe the partition and start completely fresh just in case you are "infected ".

I would see what virus scans say about your machine first though, of course.

Maybe your memory is not all compatible with the mobo.

Although your memory is pc3200 the memory timing may be important - that's outside my area of competance :)
