when I reinstalled windows xp, I lost sound and my display adapter was not located. I did a start -> run -> msinfo32 and under components, nothing showed up under display or sound. I tried to check the drivers in the device manager, but display adapter was not there. The monitor works, but it is sort of hesitates when scrolling or moving open folders around. I'm not sure if I have to reinstall software for my speakers (altec lansing vs4221) but I don't have the discs anywhere. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated-

EDIT: I downloaded the nvidia drivers from gateway and that took care of the display problem.

I found display adapter when I downloaded to nvidia drivers, but still no sound. Under other devices, everything is yellow (other PCI bridge device, PCI device, PCI simple communications controller, SM bus controller, unknown device). Under sound, video, and game controller, the following show up - audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, and video codecs. I can't find anything that says altec lansing anywhere.

I tried updating the driver, but it said a better one could not be found. When I try playing music, windows media player gives me this error message-

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

How - a repair install or a clean install following format?
If you made a clean install have you loaded the mobo chipset drivers, etc? This will generally include the drivers for the audio - I wonder if you have the default Windows drivers loaded.

The manual for your Altec Lansing vs4221 speakers makes no mention of software.

It was a clean install. I got an e-mail virus and decided to just restart from scratch. I ended up going back to gateway's website and downloaded the audio drivers from them and it solved the problem. I appreciate the help-

In the future, as Pete said:
This is always your first step.

    I'm glad, things worked out.

You need the Audio Drivers from Gateway as well, probably built on the Motherboard
