No sound device

    I had to reinstall windows xp two years ago and have no sound device since what can I do?

    Hi, make sure that you have a sound card and installed properly ( could be built-in or a separate card).

    Teresa - Welcome to the Board :)

    When you reinstalled Windows did you format the drive first? If so did you load the motherboard drivers from the motherboard CD?

    I did not do it myself but we had the discs here in the house and they were the ones used

    OK - let's establish what, if any sound device is installed in the computer ....

    Please go Start > Run > type in msinfo32 > Enter

    The System Info window should open - click on the + next to Components in the left hand pane and then on Sound Device.

    Highlight the top line in the right hand pane and then go to the menu bar at the top of that window and select Edit > Select All followed by Edit > Copy

    Paste the details into your next post here.

    Excellent - now go to Device Manager and if listed remove it and reboot .....

    Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager. Scroll down to Sound, Video and Game Controllers, click on the + sign to expand.

    If C-Media AC97 Audio Device is listed right click on it > Remove/Uninstall and reboot the computer to allow Windows to detect it again and reload the drivers.

    Post back with results.

    Goof afternoom Pete, we tried what you suggested, and the computer tells me the device con not start. When you say reboot the computer do you mean restart. I put the driver disc back in but it is not reading it.

    Lets try one more along the lines of Pete's start & run commands. Repeat the same but this time type msconfig and then hit enter. Don't make any changes, just post back as to where the dot is on the first page you get. Is it Normal Startup?

    Yes - there are subtle differences between Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart and Start > Turn Off Computer > Turn off and then restart again on the power button, but a Restart in this case is fine.

    I need more information - is the 'Device cannot start' message accompanied by a Code 10? May be a driver problem, but I need more info - see below.

    To elaborate on Rockster's post ....

    Start > Run > type in msconfig > Enter and check out his request.

    Further info required ....

    Make and model number of computer - need this to find a driver for the C-Media AC97 Audio Device as we don't have a no. for that and there are several.

    When you say that the driver CD is not being read are you saying that you cannot view the contents of it in Windows Explorer?

    Hi, it is normal startup.
    The computer is a Maxdata I don't see any numbers.
    I tried to install the disc for win.98/NT4.0/ME/2000/XP+Manual but it did not read. Tried it just now and it read but said to pick which program. Am I doing the right thing or not. I cancelled installing it.

    Put the driver disk into the computer and if it autostarts just exit, but leave the CD in the drive.

    Open Windows Explorer and open up the contents of the CD - if there are folders for XP, etc open the XP folder - is there a folder called Audio or Sound and what are the contents?

    Hi it was a Cherry Keyboard Manager I loaded it anyway. Still no sound. I went in on the computer and sound and devices. In properties it has C Media AC97 Audio Device. Location. PC1 BUS 0 Device 2. Function 7. This device can not start (Code 10). Does this mean anything to you?

    Looks like we are unable to determine the exact designation of your C Media AC97 Audio Device as there are several available.

    The drivers can be downloaded from ......

    http://www.cmedia.com.tw/?q=en/driver

    I suggest you try the oldest first ....

    Click on Onboard Audio > CM19738 > XP > Next (19738 an 19739 appear to be the same) > click on file to download and save to your hard drive.

    Unzip the file and double click on setup.exe to run and post back with results.

    you will need to install the drivers for the motherboard
    Your motherboard was made after windows xp was released
    You may have the disc, or to the website of the maker of the computer or motherboard
    often the software is from nvidia
