:) Firstly Happy New Year To All Windows BBS guru's and peeps

I have ran out of ideas in how to resolve the following problem that has been quite persistent for some time :(

I have Windows XP (SP2) All latest versions of software; Apple, Adobe, Firefox etc

I first encountered the problem with Windows Live Mail, at first i had assumed that it was a setting within Windows Live Mail. I still can't open for the sake of me, click on an URL link that will open up a webpage pertaining to that link. I had emailed Microsoft on several instances in trying to resolve the matter, but being an I.T Professional, i tried in vain to resolve it on my accord and capacity. Then comes the following, i then find out that i can't open any URL from any application; either being Gigatribe, Logitech, Windows Live Mail etc.

I had trawled the net in finding some resolutions, but am unable to find the one i'm soughing, hence this post. The only one i did come across was in regards to opening Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types (from there this is where i've become stucked) i was unable to locate what it stated 'URL: HTTP' it only had 'URL: HTML'

I have Norton Anti-Virus 2006, having checked the settings thoroughally, i have been able to isolate any fault on there, i'm unable to find the culprit. I have ran all anti-spyware, anti-virus to which the end result is 'nothing'.

This might be the simplest of options to revert back to, but i have ran out of options. So i would greatly appreciate a guru in resolving this problem for me?

    Kind Regards
    Andrew:cool:

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types - scroll down to URL. Should read Opens with Internet Explorer - screenshot

Screenshot from XP Pro in Classic mode BTW - no candy floss :)

    Happy New Year,

Could you please confirm to me if my present settings for the following are correct?

Editing Action For Type: Internet Shortcut

    Action: Open

    Application used to perform action:
    rundll32.exe ieframe.dll,OpenURL %l

    Use DDE (Checkbox) ticked on

    DDE Message:
    null

    Application:
    ieframe

    DDE Application Not Running:
    null

    Topic:
    System

I wanted to attached a 'print screen picture' of it, but was unable to find an option to attach a picture?

Anyhow, having looked at the URL for Firefox, i found the following settings.

Although the file states 'NONE' this is what the following settings had compare to the Internet Shortcut settings.

Editing Action for Type: Firefox URL

    Action:
    Open

    Application used to perform action:
    C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~2\FIREFOX.EXE -requestPending -osint -url "%1 "

    Use DDE (Checkbox) ticked on

    DDE Message:
"%1 ",,0,0,,,, (not present on Internet URL?)

    Application:
    Firefox

    Topic:
WWW_OpenURL (not present on Internet URL?)

if any of the settings have been changed, i can assure you that no amateur is going to tamper with them.

    I kindly await your response.

    Kind Regards
    Andrew :D

I had also forgot to mention, that i have looked in Event Viewer and there is no Event ID associated with this, as i would have provided this information to further aid this problem. As i'm such a meticulous individual :p

If you are trying to open links from within a given application, the one you're looking for is URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol. However, I use IE for the default browser so I can't tell you how things should be for Firefox. Post what you have for that one. Perhaps somebody that uses Firefox can help.

I had not appreciated that you were a Firefox user - I use IE7 as my default browser so the settings will be different.

I have moved your thread over to the Firefox forum and will continue to follow it there.

I appreciate your honesty, but in essence this is an Internet Explorer issue, i have provided the settings for what is current for my URL:Internet Shortcut ...

If i didn't make myself any clearer i'm sorry ...but to reiterate, i can not open any weblink from any given application; Logitech, MSN, Gigatribe etc etc ...so have i posted in the right category. I was merely only highlighting the settings for URL:Firefox, not necessary implying it was for that

    OK - moved back

As far as I can see your settings are correct - assuming 'null' implies a blank box - screenshot.

Which version of IE are you using? If it is IE 7 I would suggest going to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Windows Internet Explorer 7 which will roll you back to IE 6 (You can always re-install IE 7 at a later date.)
Not a program I use or have used, but if the problem coincided with installing Live Mail ....

Does Internet Explorer/Firefox connect to the Internet? I would guess not from what you say.

When you click on a link what happens - nothing, an error message or ???
You can only do this if you are a Contributing Member. The alternative is to post on a photo hosting site - Photobucket or similar and to post the URL here.

The Screen Shot of the 'URL for Internet shortcut' does match my current settings. I do have Internet Explorer 7, but had no problem with this before. I had reverted Windows Live Mail back to Outlook Express 6, but same problem was occuring there.

I give you an example of the error message that is created, say if try and open an email that contains a URL link.

Windows cannot find 'http:\\windowsbbs.com\showthread.php?t=70078&goto=newspost'. Make sure you typed the name correctly , and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

That is the same error, i get for any application when trying to open a webpage!

I hope this provides useful information, to find a resolution ??

You need to check the settings for URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol for this. Not Internet shortcut. The Internet shortcut one is for things like your favorites or bookmarks as the case may be. The HyperText one is for links that you click on in your email and other programs.

I'm not really sure I'm understanding things here. You say it's an IE problem but your settings for the Internet shortcut one show you are using Firefox for your default browser. Which browser do you want to be the default?

Below is a picture of the settings I have for URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol. If you're using Firefox, yours will differ of course. Otherwise, it should look like that except for the drive letter. My Windows is on the D drive. If yours is on C, you'll have to change the path accordingly.

If you're using Firefox, I would suggest that you set IE to the default browser (tools>internet options>programs and then click the make default button), then reboot, open Firefox and set it as the default browser.

If you're using IE, check in IE's options and see if it's set as the default. If not, set it. If it is already set as the default browser, try setting Firefox as the default, reboot and then set IE as the default. Setting the browser as the default should correct those settings.

    Edit:
The pic below doesn't show the entire command in the application used to perform action box. This is what the entire command is.

Zander's right on the money - I had missed that one. It's towards the top of the list amongst the extension type - (none).

    His settings coincide with mine.
